Speech motor control primitives arising from a dynamical systems model of vocal tract articulation

چکیده
We present a method to derive a small number of speech motor control “primitives” that can produce linguistically-interpretable articulatory movements. We envision that such a dictionary of primitives can be useful for speech motor control, particularly in finding a lowdimensional subspace for such control. First, we use the iterative Linear Quadratic Gaussian (iLQG) algorithm to derive (for a set of utterances) a set of stochastically optimal control inputs to a dynamical systems model of the vocal tract that produces desired movement sequences. Second, we use a convolutive Nonnegative Matrix Factorization with sparseness constraints (cNMFsc) algorithm to find a small dictionary of control input primitives that can be used to reproduce the aforementioned optimal control inputs that produce the observed articulatory movements. Such a primitives-based framework could help inform theories of speech motor control and coordination.

متن کاملFunctional and Quantitative MRI Mapping of Somatomotor Representations of Human Supralaryngeal Vocal Tract
Speech articulation requires precise control of and coordination between the effectors of the vocal tract (e.g., lips, tongue, soft palate, and larynx). However, it is unclear how the cortex represents movements of and contact between these effectors during speech, or how these cortical responses relate to inter-regional anatomical borders. Here, we used phase-encoded fMRI to map somatomotor re...
متن کاملSpeech Production
INTRODUCTION Understanding speech production requires a synthesis of perspectives found in physiology, motor control, cognitive science, and linguistics. Here we focus on presenting work in the areas of motor control, dynamical systems and neural networks, and linguistics which we feel is critical in understanding functional architecture and characteristics of the speech production system. Cent...
متن کاملComparison of Motor Skills Among Studens with Intellectual Disability, Stuttering, Articulation Problems and Normal Speech
Objective: This research aimed to compare the motor skills among students with intellectual disability, stuttering, articulation problems and normal speech. Methods: The study was a retrospective causal-comparative research. From among all elementary male students with intellectual disability in Urmia city, 90 students (30 students in each group) were selected. All groups completed the revised ...
متن کاملDirectly data-derived articulatory gesture-like representations retain discriminatory information about phone categories
How the speech production and perception systems evolved in humans still remains a mystery today. Previous research suggests that human auditory systems are able, and have possibly evolved, to preserve maximal information about the speaker's articulatory gestures. This paper attempts an initial step towards answering the complementary question of whether speakers' articulatory mechanisms have a...
