Resilience and Robustness

Resilience and robustness are system concepts applicable to structural engineering as well as other areas such as social sciences and economics. This paper explores these two concepts with particular reference to structural systems. Robustness is a structural performance requirement in most structural design codes but there is no method of verification. Resilience is a ̳work in progress‘ concept which, at present, could have a number of different meanings. While robustness enables structural system to cope with accidental actions, resilience appears to be a broader concept seeking to address/mitigate the consequences of failure. The paper argues that implementing these two concepts in structural design remains a challenge to the structural engineers in the twenty first century.
