The Deposition of Collagen in Relation to Schwann Cell Basement Membrane during Peripheral Nerve Regeneration
نویسنده
چکیده
The basement membranes sur rounding the Schwann cells of per ipheral myel inated nerve fibers form un in te r rup ted tubes ensheathing the fibers, being continuous across the nodes of Ranvie r (9, 20). Dur ing Wal ler ian degenerat ion, the basement membranes persist and within the spaces enclosed by them (the " S c h w a n n tubes") the Schwann cells proliferate concurrent ly with the removal of the degenerat ing axon and myelin. Longi tudina l columns of cells result, const i tut ing the " b a n d s of Bfingner ." These changes have been described bo th in nerve roots (11, 12) and in the per ipheral nerve t runk (19). Na than ie l and Pease (13) have demonstra ted tha t dur ing degenerat ion after a localized crush injury to the dorsal roots, in the rat, the Schwann cells become surrounded by new basement memb rane and collagen fibrils, which form within the original Schwann tubes. The present communica t ion confirms this finding for rabbi t per ipheral nerve and reports a relationship between the formation of new basement membrane and collagen deposition. Electrophysiological Study of Sciatic Nerve Regeneration Through Tubes Seeded with Schwann Cells
A B S T R A C TIntroduction: Peripheral nerve injury is a common disorder and leads to permanent neurological defects. Schwann cells have been shown to have nerve repair after being transplanted in peripheral nerve injury. The aim of this study was to determine the beneficial effect of allograft Schwann cells on electrophysiological outcome after transection of the sciatic nerve in rats.Methods...
متن کاملTissue culture observations relevant to the study of axon-Schwann cell interactions during peripheral nerve development and repair.
During peripheral nerve development the Schwann cell population is expanded so that adequate numbers are available for ensheathment of both nonmyelinated and myelinated nerve fibres. As ensheathment of these fibres progresses each axon--Schwann cell unit becomes surrounded by a basal lamina, providing a unique microtubular framework within the peripheral nerve trunk. Tissue culture studies of p...
متن کاملThe role of the desert hedgehog signaling pathway during degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves
The desert hedgehog (Dhh) signaling pathway is involved in the development of peripheral nerves (PNs). Dhh-null mice show abnormal neuronal development and perineurial barrier function. As it was previously shown that dhh is mainly expressed in developmental nerves and Sonic hedgehog protein (dhh homologous) has therapeutic effects in neuronal survival, we attempted to investigate the possible ...

متن کاملPerineurial Cells Coexpress Genes Encoding Interstitial Collagens and Basement Membrane Zone Components
Perineurial cell cultures were established from the sciatic nerves of adult Wistar rats. Highly enriched cultures were studied with respect to the production of extracellular matrix components under conditions free from the influence of Schwann cells, axons, or the extracellular matrix of peripheral nerves. Indirect immunofluorescence staining revealed the presence of collagen type IV epitopes,...
