چکیده

Many learning systems must confront the problem of run time after learning being greater than run time before learning. This utility problem has been a particular focus of research in explanation-based learning (EBL). This paper shows how the cost increase of a learned rule in an EBL system can be analyzed by characterizing the learning process as a sequence of transformations from a problem solving episode to a learned rule. The analysis of how the cost changes through the transformations can be a useful tool for revealing the sources of cost increase in the learning system. Once all of the sources are revealed, by avoiding these sources, the learned rule will never be expensive. That is, the cost of the learned rule will be bounded by the problem solving. We performed such a transformational analysis of chunking in Soar. The chunking process has been decomposed into a sequence of transformations from the problem solving to a chunk. By analyzing these transformations, we have identi ed a set of sources which can make the output chunk

Interpretive focus groups: a participatory method for interpreting and extending secondary analysis of qualitative data

BACKGROUND Participatory approaches to qualitative research practice constantly change in response to evolving research environments. Researchers are increasingly encouraged to undertake secondary analysis of qualitative data, despite epistemological and ethical challenges. Interpretive focus groups can be described as a more participative method for groups to analyse qualitative data. OBJECT...

The Impact of Teaching Chunks on Speaking Fluency of Iranian EFL Learners

Research on multiword clusters (chunks) is based on the assumption that native speakers use plenty of chunks in their everyday language and they are considered as fluent speakers of language. Therefore the present study was an attempt to investigate the impact of using chunks on speaking fluency of Iranian EFL learners. In the first phase of the study, the students of two intermediate classes s...

Eliminating Expensive Chunks by Restricting Expressiveness

Chunking, an experience based-learning mechanism, improves Soar's performance a great deal when viewed in terms of the number of subproblems required and the number of steps within a subproblem. This high-level view of the impact of chunking on performance is based on an deal computational model, which says that the time per step is constant. However, if the chunks created by chunking are expen...
