چکیده

The reduction of CO2 on copper electrodes has attracted great attentions in the last decades, since it provides a sustainable approach for energy restore. During the CO2 reduction process, the electron transfer to COads is experimentally suggested to be the crucial step. In this work, we examine two possible pathways in CO activation, i.e. to generate COHads and CHOads, respectively, by performing the state-of-the-art constrained ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on the charged Cu(100) electrode under aqueous conditions, which is close to the realistic electrochemical condition. The free energy profile in the formation of COHads via the coupled proton and electron transfer is plotted. Furthermore, by Bader charge analyses, a linear relationship between C-O bond distance and the negative charge in CO fragment is unveiled. The formation of CHOads is identified to be a surface catalytic reaction, which requires the adsorption of H atom on the surface first. By comparing these two pathways, we demonstrate that kinetically the formation of COHads is more favored than that of CHOads, while CHOads is thermodynamically more stable. This work reveals that CO activation via COHads intermediate is an important pathway in electrocatalysis, which could provide some insights into CO2 electroreduction over Cu electrodes.

Surface reconstruction of pure-Cu single-crystal electrodes under Co-reduction potentials in alkaline solutions: A study by seriatim ECSTM-DEMS

Quasi-operando electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) recently showed that a polycrystalline Cu electrode kept in 0.1 M KOH at -0.9 V (SHE), a potential very close to that for electrochemical CO reduction, underwent a two-step surface reconstruction, initially to Cu(111), or Cu(pc)-[Cu(111)], and terminally to Cu(100), or Cu(pc)-[Cu(100)]. When subjected to monolayer-limited Cu(s...

The Effect of Cu Impurity on the CO-dissociation Mechanism on the Fe (100) Surface: A Full Potential DFT Study

In this study, the theoretical calculations of CO dissociation were carried out on Cu-Fe alloy surface by a full-potential method, which made more accurate results especially on the prediction of adsorption energies. This process may be governed by either a direct route or a H-assisted via HCO and COH intermediates pathways. In comparison to the pure surface Fe (100), the presence of Cu atom en...

Cu(2)O nanowires in an alumina template: electrochemical conditions for the synthesis and photoluminescence characteristics.

Cu2O nanowires, mainly consisting of (100) and (200) polycrystalline structures with a length of 4 mum are prepared by electrochemical deposition using a porous alumina template. It is found that the optimized electrochemical conditions to prepare Cu2O nanowires are different from those for the formation of a bulk thin Cu2O layer since different pH values are found between the tip of the pores ...

Cu metal embedded in oxidized matrix catalyst to promote CO2 activation and CO dimerization for electrochemical reduction of CO2.

We propose and validate with quantum mechanics methods a unique catalyst for electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) in which selectivity and activity of CO and C2 products are both enhanced at the borders of oxidized and metallic surface regions. This Cu metal embedded in oxidized matrix (MEOM) catalyst is consistent with observations that Cu2O-based electrodes improve performance. However, w...
