Ancient Inequality

چکیده
Is inequality largely the result of the Industrial Revolution? Or, were preindustrial incomes as unequal as they are today? For want of sufficient data, these questions have not yet been answered. This paper infers inequality for 29 ancient, pre-industrial societies using what are known as social tables, stretching from the Roman Empire 14 AD, to Byzantium in 1000, to England in 1688, to Nueva España around 1790, to China in 1880 and to British India in 1947. It applies two new concepts in making those assessments – what we call the inequality possibility frontier and the inequality extraction ratio. Rather than simply offering measures of inequality, we compare its observed level with the maximum feasible inequality (or surplus) that could have been extracted by the elite. The results, especially when compared with modern poor countries, give new insights into the connection between inequality and economic development in the very long run. Generalizations of an Ancient Greek Inequality about the Sequence of Primes
In this note, we generalize an ancient Greek inequality about the sequence of primes to the cases of arithmetic progressions even multivariable polynomials with integral coefficients. We also refine Bouniakowsky’s conjecture [16] and Conjecture 2 in [22]. Moreover, we give two remarks on conjectures in [22].

He Chengtian s inequality is used to re-build the King Fang s musical scales 41/24 and 53/31 in 40 BC. The technology, which might be little known to the West, has been used for millennia by ancient Chinese, and can be powerfully applied to nonlinear problems. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
متن کاملInequality and Emancipation : An Educational Approach
Emancipation has lost its charisma. In the 1960s, the term had been one of the saviour-concepts in the educational debate on social inequality and the political function of pedagogy in Western countries. Nowadays, as the discussion is still ongoing, the word is rarely in use. Overloaded with political enmeshments and a plurality of meanings, emancipation seems to be nothing more than a nearly f...
متن کاملRedesigning Money to Serve Economies of Well-being and Happiness
I believe the greatest threat to the pursuit of genuine happiness and well-being is our current debt-money system. In the face of an international debt-crisis, it is remarkable that there is no serious discussion about the nature of money, or about how and who creates our money. While meaningful conversations about alternative measures of progress (e.g. Gross National Happiness, Genuine Progres...
