چکیده

Construction-based approaches to grammar are driven by the insight that meaning plays a crucial role in answering this question: the meanings of both words and grammatical structures can affect grammaticality, and they should therefore be incorporated into grammatical representations. To wit, the various approaches presented in this volume take this tack in predicting the grammaticality of utterances of all sorts, from the creative to the conventional. But focusing on utterance grammaticality removes utterances from their physical and social contexts of use. The result is an approach to language that resembles traditional anatomy, in which utterances are dissected, categorized, and explained in terms of their structural and distributional properties. Insights from such an approach can be both useful and informative in accounting for what utterances are or potentially could be. They do not, however, explain human language use—that is, the mechanisms and representations that human beings use to learn, produce, and understand utterances. If we are interested in these latter issues, issues more properly situated within cognitive science than analytical linguistics, then we find our investigations of grammar (and language more generally) guided by a different sort of question:

Cognitive Modeling Approaches to Language Comprehension Using Construction Grammar

This paper examines the relationship between modeling human sentence comprehension using cognitive architectures and approaches to linguistic knowledge representation using construction grammars. We review multiple computational models of language understanding that vary in their use of construction grammar and cognitive architectures. We present a case study: Lucia, that uses Embodied Construc...

Representing Caused Motion in Embodied Construction Grammar

This paper offers an Embodied Construction Grammar (Feldman et al. 2010) representation of caused motion, thereby also providing (a sample of) the computational infrastructure for implementing the information that FrameNet has characterized as Caused_motion (Ruppenhofer et al. 2010). This work specifies the semantic structure of caused motion in natural language, using an Embodied Construction ...

A (Very) Brief Introduction To Fluid Construction Grammar

Fluid Construction Grammar (FCG) is a new linguistic formalism designed to explore in how far a construction grammar approach can be used for handling open-ended grounded dialogue, i.e. dialogue between or with autonomous embodied agents about the world as experienced through their sensory-motor apparatus. We seek scalable, open-ended language systems by giving agents both the ability to use ex...

Simulated Action in an Embodied Construction Grammar

Various lines of research on language have converged on the premise that linguistic knowledge has as its basic unit pairings of form and meaning. The precise nature of the meanings involved, however, remains subject to the longstanding debate between proponents of arbitrary, abstract representations and those who argue for more detailed perceptuo-motor representations. We propose a model, Embod...

The Emergence of Semantic Roles in Fluid Construction Grammar

This paper shows how experiments on artificial language evolution can provide highly relevant results for important debates in linguistic theories. It reports on a series of experiments that investigate how semantic roles can emerge in a population of artificial embodied agents and how these agents can build a network of constructions. The experiment also includes a fully operational implementa...
