Oblique Aerial Photographs - an “old-new” Data Source

نویسنده

  • Kimmo Nurminen
چکیده

New imaging platforms, progress in digital cameras, the use of GNSS/IMU technology either in direct sensor orientation or in integrated sensor orientation, new thinking with regard to control information in georeferencing, and co-operation between two disciplines – photogrammetry and computer vision – have brought the possibility of using oblique aerial photographs as a data source into the limelight. This article sheds light on the history of oblique aerial photographs, gives information about related practical experiences, and envisions the possible near future related to this new-found photogrammetric data product. An important new finding of this study is the use of time-series of oblique photographs for enabling image orientation in structure-frommotion software.

Using image-based modelling (SfM-MVS) to produce a 1935 ortho-mosaic of the Ethiopian highlands

Approximately 34,000 aerial photographs covering large parts of Ethiopia and dating back to 1935-41 have been recently recovered. These allow investigating environmental dynamics for a past period that until now was only accessible from terrestrial photographs or narratives. As the archive consists of both oblique and vertical aerial photographs that cover rather small areas, methods of image-b...

The Application of Digital Techniques to the Detection and Extraction of Archaeological Earthwork Monuments from Aerial Photographs

Aerial photographs are a valuable resource for archaeological assessment, but their accurate interpretation is extremely labour intensive. The application of digital image processing techniques to the assessment process has, to-date, primarily focused on providing automatic measurement and correction of distortions inherent in oblique images. However, the monument discovery and mapping process ...

Trying to Break New Ground in Aerial Archaeology

Aerial reconnaissance continues to be a vital tool for landscape-oriented archaeological research. Although a variety of remote sensing platforms operate within the earth’s atmosphere, the majority of aerial archaeological information is still derived from oblique photographs collected during observer-directed reconnaissance flights, a prospection approach which has dominated archaeological aer...

The role of remote sensing and GIS in risk mapping and damage assessment for disasters in urban areas

The increased vulnerability of many urban areas, especially in developing countries is a major reason of concern. Emphasis should be given to the reduction of vulnerability in urban areas. Most of the data required for disaster management has a spatial component, and is also changing over time. Therefore the use of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems has become essential in urban ...

Change detection in coral reef communities using Ikonos satellite sensor imagery and historic aerial photographs

For decades, aerial photographs have been the only source of very high spatial resolution data for coral reef researchers. With the launch of the Ikonos satellite in 1999, imagery with a 4 m spatial resolution in multispectral mode can now be combined with historical aerial photographs for change detection. We demonstrate this potential by combining two aerial photographs (1981 and 1992) and an...
