چکیده

In the past several years there have been several large (Mw > 7.0) earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean region (Gulf of Aqaba, Racha, Adana, etc.), many of which have had aftershock deployments by local seismological organizations. In addition to providing ground truth data (GT << 5 km) that is used in regional location calibration and validation, the waveform data can be used to aid in calibrating regional magnitudes, seismic discriminants, and velocity structure. For small regional events (mb << 4.5), a stable, accurate magnitude is essential in the development of realistic detection threshold curves, proper magnitude and distance amplitude correction processing, formation of an M s:mb discriminant, and accurate yield determination of clandestine nuclear explosions.

Reference Events for Regional Seismic Phases at IMS Stations in China

Seismic-event location within the context of monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty entails a priori knowledge of the travel time of seismic phases for a given source to stations of the International Monitoring System (IMS). Such travel-time information (or ground truth, GT) is provided empirically by seismic reference events, events that have well-determined hypocenter locations ...

Moment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran

Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...

THE SOURCE PARAMETERS OF THE SAN FERNANDO EARTHQUAKE INFERRED FROM TELESEISMIC BODY WAVES BY MAX WYss AND THOMAS

The accuracy of teleseismic estimates of moment, fault area, dislocation and stress drop was tested for the case of a thrust fault: the San Fernando, California, earthquake of Feburary 9, 1971. On the basis of P-wave spectra of 25 stations and S-wave spectra of 9 stations, the respective values were found to be 0.7.1026 dyne-cm, 570 km 2, 45 cm, and 14 bars. They agree well with the same parame...

Development of a mathematical model to design an offshore wind and wave hybrid energy system

Fossil Fuels are always considered as environmental pollutants. On the other hand, the political and economic situations highly affect the price of these fuels. Offshore wind and wave, as renewable energy sources, represent the better alternatives for electricity generation. Therefore, it is necessary that wind speeds effectively be estimated due to the absence of field measurements of the wind...

Teleseismic and Strong-motion Source Spectra from Two Earthquakes in Eastern Taiwan

The 20 May and 14 November 1986 Hualien earthquakes occurred in a seismically active region of Taiwan. Locally determined focal mechanisms and aftershock patterns from the Taiwan Telemetered Seismographic Network indicate that both earthquakes occurred on steeply dipping reverse faults that trend NNE. This agrees with teleseismic first-motion data for the May event but not for the November even...
