A Comprehensive Review of Spalling and Fire Performance of Concrete Members
نویسنده
چکیده
Spalling of concrete in fire is due to dislodgement of small pieces of concrete. This phenomenon is one of the most detrimental effects causing damage or even failure of the concrete members during or after a fire by decreasing the residual mechanical properties and durability of the structure. In spite of many experimental and numerical studies, the real mechanism of spalling is still not well understood, which is mainly due to the erratic nature of this phenomenon and inhomogeneity of the concrete structures. To establish a more clear view of the achievements in this area and also the areas in need of more investigations, this paper critically reviews the latest findings on concrete performance during heating in general and specifically the fire spalling behaviour of concrete members and different views on governing factors that affect this phenomenon.

متن کاملEffects of polypropylene fibres in concrete: Microstructure after fire testing and chloride migration
Explosive spalling of pieces of concrete from the heated surface is considered to be the most dangerous effect of damage of concrete subjected to intense fire attack, especially when it occurs in restricted areas such as underground tunnels. Recent investigations have revealed that the amount of explosive spalling and the extent of cracking can considerably be reduced by use of suitable amount ...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance in Porous Media ( MRPM 9 ) July 13 - 17 , 2008 Schlumberger – Doll Research
During the past thirty years concrete has developed enormously in both strength and durability. A downside of these improvements is the increased risk of explosive spalling in case of fire. The moisture inside the concrete plays an important role in this spalling mechanism. As the temperature is increasing during a fire the water will start to boil in the concrete. However due to its low permea...
متن کاملA Model for evaluating the fire resistance of high performance concrete columns
A numerical model, in the form of a computer program, for evaluating the fire resistance of high performance concrete (HPC) columns is presented. The three stages, associated with the thermal and structural analysis, for the calculation of fire resistance of columns is explained. A simplified approach is proposed to account for spalling under fire conditions. The use of the computer program for...
متن کاملFire Resistance of Concrete with Fly Ash Content – Experimental Analysis
The paper presents results from three large scale experiments on seven reinforced concrete panels obtained during an extensive experimental program. This was aimed at possible application of cement reduced (fly ash replaced) concrete in the production of precast segmental linings for tunnels created by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). In particular, this paper is focused on the comparison of fire...
