چکیده

INTRODUCTION Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital craniofacial deformity. Up to 80 % of this population has a skeletal defect. While the surgical procedures for reconstructing the skeletal defects in children with facial clefts is well established [1, 2], it remains unclear how the cleft leads to the alteration in the stress/strain distribution within the maxillary palate, the alveolar arch and the midfacial skeleton. Our preliminary study revealed that unilateral cleft leads to non-uniform, asymmetric stress/strain distribution within the maxillary skeleton during functional tasks [3]. The aim of the current study was to verify such hypothesis that the size (depth and width) of unilateral cleft affects the severity of the non-uniform stress/strain distribution within the mid-facial skeleton.

Stress and displacement pattern evaluation using two different palatal expanders in unilateral cleft lip and palate: a three-dimensional finite element analysis

BACKGROUND In this finite element (FE) study, the stress distribution and displacement pattern was evaluated in the mid-palatal area and around circum-maxillary sutures exerted by bone-borne palatal expander (BBPE) in comparison with conventional HYRAX rapid palatal expander in unilateral cleft lip and palate. METHODS Computed tomography scan images of a patient with unilateral cleft palate w...

Displacements prediction from 3D finite element model of maxillary protraction with and without rapid maxillary expansion in a patient with unilateral cleft palate and alveolus

BACKGROUND Both maxillary protraction and rapid expansion are recommended for patients with cleft palate and alveolus. The aim of the study is to establish a three-dimensional finite element model of the craniomaxillary complex with unilateral cleft palate and alveolus to simulate maxillary protraction with and without rapid maxillary expansion. The study also investigates the deformation of th...

Effects of Tongue Plate on the Nasomaxillary Complex of Patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

Background and aim: Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common orofacial abnormalities. Patients with these deformities commonly present with midface deficiency and need challenging treatment modalities that focus on improving the position of the maxilla. Tongue plate appliance is an intraoral device that has shown promising results in the treatment of growing patients with maxillary ...

A new method for maxillary arch form design in cleft lip and palate patients

Introduction: A study on the presentation of a modified beta function formula to predict maxillary arch form in patients with cleft palate (CLP) is of great importance. In order to have this information, this study was done to present a modified beta function formula for predicting upper dental arch of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and to assess its accuracy. Since this information c...

Three-dimensional digital evaluation of dental arches in infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

The aim of this study was to measure and compare the dimensions of the dental arches on three-dimensional digital study models in children with and without cleft lip and palate before the primary surgery. The sample consisted of 223 digital models of children aged 3-9 months, divided into 5 groups: without craniofacial deformities, unilateral and bilateral incomplete cleft lip and alveolus, uni...
