Biofouling Remediation Equals Higher Speed, Lower Drag

چکیده

Biofouling, also known as barnacles and slime, may not be the trendiest, high-tech topic of conversation in the world of operational energy. Most would rather discuss a new weapon system or innovative green technology that allows Sailors and Marines to increase operational tempo or achieve more efficient fuel consumption. What most people don’t realize is that biofouling may actually represent the single largest factor undermining fuel efficiency in surface combatant and Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessels today.

Preparation, anti-biofouling and drag-reduction properties of a biomimetic shark skin surface

Shark skin surfaces show non-smoothness characteristics due to the presence of a riblet structure. In this study, biomimetic shark skin was prepared by using the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-embedded elastomeric stamping (PEES) method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the surface microstructure and fine structure of shark skin and biomimetic shark skin. To analyse the hydro...

An assessment of the ship drag penalty arising from light calcareous tubeworm fouling.

A test coupon coated with light calcareous tubeworm fouling was scanned, scaled and reproduced for wind-tunnel testing to determine the equivalent sand grain roughness ks. It was found that this surface had a ks = 0.325 mm, substantially less than the previously reported values for light calcareous fouling. This result was used to predict the drag on a fouled full scale ship. To achieve this, a...

Comparing Biofouling Control Treatments for Use on Aquaculture Nets

Test panels comprised of uncoated, copper coated and silicone coated 7/8'' (22 mm) mesh knitted nylon net were evaluated to compare their properties and the effectiveness to prevent biofouling. This paper describes test procedures that were developed to quantify the performance in terms of antifouling, cleanability, drag and cost. The copper treatment was the most effective at controlling fouli...

Numerical Investigation on the Effect of Tunnel Height on Drag Reduction in a High Speed Trimaran

There are different methods to reduce drag in high speed hulls. One of these methods is a change in the shape of the body by adding longitudinal side tunnels. In this paper it has been attempted to determine the influence of the tunnel height on hydrodynamic characteristics of the hull to achieving an optimum shape for the tunnel. To achieve this purpose, numerical simulation of the problem has...

Marine biofouling: a sticky problem.

Organisms that colonise underwater surfaces, such as barnacle larvae and spores of algae, use a diverse array of biological 'glues' to provide both temporary and more permanent adhesion. The practical consequence of colonisation by these organisms is biofouling - something that has plagued mariners for years - causing increased drag and, in extreme cases, corrosion. Might there be a biological ...
