چکیده

Total or partial fissure in the middle of the sternum (cleft sternum or fissura sterni congenita) is a rare congenital anomaly. Absence of skeleton in the front part of the chest wall gives rise to a severely paradoxical movement of this part of the thorax (Figs 1 and 2). Moreover, the pulsations of the heart and large vessels are clearly visible because they are covered only by soft tissues. The anomaly is caused by a disturbance in embryonic development, of unknown origin. This disturbance in embryonic development may lead to various degrees of cleft sternum (de Groot and Huizinga, 1954):

Primary repair of a sternal cleft in an infant with autogenous tissues.

A cleft sternum is a rare congenital anomaly often diagnosed as asymptomatic at birth. Clinical outcome may be unfavorable when an associated anomaly, particularly an intracardiac anomaly coexists with the defect. Primary repair should be employed in the neonatal period because the flexibility of the chest wall is maximal and compression of underlying structures is minimal. However, patients wi...

The cleft sternum: a possible role for pliable prosthetic reconstruction.

BACKGROUND Faced with our intraoperative inability to primarily close a very wide isolated cleft sternum of a pediatric patient without causing cardiovascular decompensation, we describe our use of a synthetic material for partial approximation allowing muscular coverage. METHOD We report an infant who was born with an isolated large complete sternal cleft where a trial of primary surgical re...

Congenital mid-line cervical cleft: case report and review of literature.

Congenital Mid-line Cervical Cleft (CMCC) is a rare but interesting congenital anomaly of the neck that is frequently misdiagnosed. Much controversy exist regarding its aetiology. Embryologically, the occurrence of CMCC is thought to be due to many hypotheses that include impaired mid-line fusion of the first or second branchial arches, exteriorisation of a thyroglossal duct remnant, and or inc...

Congenital Sternal Cleft along with Persistent Left-Sided Superior Vena Cava: A Rare Presentation

Congenital sternal cleft is a rare abnormality resulting from fusion failure of sternum. It occurs in isolation or along with defects of abdominal wall, diaphragm, pericardium, and heart. Early surgical correction is required to protect the underlying structures for risk of cardiac compression. Here we report a case of 20-day female child presenting with congenital sternal cleft associated with...

Congenital cranial ventral abdominal hernia, peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia and sternal cleft in a 4-year-old multiparous pregnant queen

Case summary Cranial ventral midline hernias, most often congenital, can be associated with other congenital abnormalities, such as sternal, diaphragmatic or cardiac malformations. A 4-year-old multiparous queen with a substernal hernia was admitted for evaluation of a mammary mass. During CT examination, a bifid sternum, the abdominal hernia containing the intestines, spleen, omentum, three fe...
