چکیده

Introduction Approximately 87% of the southern forests within the United States are owned by private companies (27%) and non‐industrial private forest owners (60%) (Hanson, et al., 2010). Within these southern forests, more than 61% of longleaf pine, a fire‐dependent species, is privately owned (America’s Longleaf Restoration Initiative, 2014). With such a large holding, land management decisions made by the individuals who own these lands can significantly impact both the economic and environmental value of these lands. Since many of these forests provide ecosystem services that depend on frequent fire, building a positive network for private landowners that supports prescribed burning efforts is essential. An increase in prescribed burning on privately owned lands will achieve numerous desired land management goals, including restoration of longleaf pine ecosystems, reduction of wildfire risk, and the protection of natural, human, and economic resources (Burke, Steelman, & Gharis, 2012). To ensure that landowner perceptions support these objectives, significant efforts must be made to communicate the importance of and need for prescribed fire, while mitigating the negative perceptions of its use.

Perceptions of Landowners Concerning Conservation, Grazing, Fire, and Eastern Redcedar Management in Tallgrass Prairie

Successful prairie restoration will depend in part on convincing private landowners with agricultural and recreational use goals to implement appropriate rangeland management practices, such as prescribed burning and cattle grazing, to control invasive species and encroachment of woody plants. However, landowners have been slow to adopt appropriate practices in the US Midwest. The purpose of th...

Perceptions of Texas Landowners Regarding Fire and Its Use

Growing recognition that periodic fire is critical for maintaining the health of many rangeland ecosystems and concerns over more frequent catastrophic wildfires have focused attention on prescribed fire as an ecosystem restoration and fuel management tool. In states such as Texas, where most land is privately owned, the level of success of outreach activities aimed at expanding the adoption of...

Social and Ecological Factors Influencing Attitudes Toward the Application of High-Intensity Prescribed Burns to Restore Fire Adapted Grassland Ecosystems

Fire suppression in grassland systems that are adapted to episodic fire has contributed to the recruitment of woody species in grasslands worldwide. Even though the ecology of restoring these fire prone systems back to grassland states is becoming clearer, a major hurdle to the reintroduction of historic fires at a landscape scale is its social acceptability. Despite the growing body of literat...

Incentives for Biodiversity Conservation on Non-Industrial Private Forests: An Analysis of Landowners’ Participation

Although non-industrial private forests (NIPF) provide significant habitat for a variety of species, limited information is available on how landowners would respond to the adoption of practices that promote biodiversity conservation on their lands. We examined NIPF landowner preferences for adopting four such practices-extending timber rotation age, extending riparian buffer strips, periodic p...
