چکیده

The albumin component is, by reason of size and net charge and concentration, chiefly responsible for plasmas osmotic activity ( 1) .2 The validity of Starling's hypothesis in the dynamics of water balance in conditions associated with hypoproteinemia has been the subject of considerable recent discussion. The basic experimental problems involved have been considered by some of us in other publications (2, 3) and by many other authors (4-11). The present senior authors, at first separately and now in collaboration, have had the problem of the relation of edema to serum colloid osmotic pressure under experimental observation in a wide variety of clinical situations. We have constantly faced the question: Do we have to measure colloid osmotic pressures, or can we predict from total protein and protein distribution data (usually readily available on metabolic ward patients) with sufficient accuracy to suit our thinking? For although many recent workers have made direct measurements, a certain amount of think-

Stability of Colloid Osmotic Pressure of Serum Protein By

The work of earlier investigators, Govaerts (1), Barath (2), Cope (3), Peters et al. (4) and Kylin (5) has given the impression that the colloid osmotic pressure is not only lowered with decrease in serum protein but its specific pressure (pressure per unit of protein) is also diminished. The lowering of specific pressure has usually been related to a greater decrease in the albumin fraction of...

Osmotic Factors Influencing the Formation of Ascites in Patients with Cirrhosis of the Liver.

According to present concepts, the ascites that occurs in patients with cirrhosis of the liver is formed by transudation from the plasma into the peritoneal cavity through the walls of the capillaries of the portal system. A ready explanation for this transudation has been at hand, based upon the hypothesis originally proposed by Starling (1 to 3) that interchange of fluid between blood and tis...

The colloid osmotic pressures of invertebrate body fluids.

Colloid osmotic pressures of the body fluids of twenty invertebrate species were measured directly. The results, which are generally lower than predicted values for the same species, pertain to several physiological questions: (1) they do not quantitatively explain the frequently observed hyperosmoticity of body fluids in species believed to be osmoconformers, indicating that the condition cann...

Transcapillary fluid flux and inflammatory response during neonatal therapeutic hypothermia: an open, longitudinal, observational study

BACKGROUND Therapeutic hypothermia is neuroprotective in asphyxiated neonates by counteracting mechanisms contributing to brain injury. Although an initial increased permeability is part of an inflammatory reaction and thereby a natural healing process, an excessive endothelial permeability with edema formation may result in impaired hemodynamics. Reduced permeability may, however, benefit heal...

Measurements of serum colloid osmotic pressure are of limited usefulness.

We examined the usefulness of serum colloid osmotic pressure measurement in patients with chronic rather than acutely occurring low serum protein concentrations. We used two oncometers, the IL 186 Weil Oncometer and the Wescor Model 4100; results from the two instruments were interchangeable. Values for the colloid osmotic pressure were compared with those for serum total protein (r = 0.783) an...
