Necrotising Enterocolitis

چکیده

It is estimated that nearly 12% of infants born weighing less than 1500 g will develop NEC and about 30% of these infants will not survive. [4] More than 85% of all NEC cases occur in infants of very low birth weight or in very premature infants. [5]Full-term and nearterm infants also develop the disease. Patent ductus arteriosus is a risk factor in premature babies, especially if conservative closure using indometacin has been attempted. In full-term infants, NEC is usually associated with predisposing or underlying disorders: Perinatal asphyxia. Polycythaemia. Respiratory distress. Congenital anomalies (myelomeningocele, congenital heart disease). Cow's milk protein-induced enterocolitis and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency have been mooted as possible pathophysiological mechanisms.

Oral vancomycin in prevention of necrotising enterocolitis.

Eighty four very low birthweight babies (considered high risk for developing necrotising enterocolitis) were given vancomycin orally for 48 hours before introduction of oral feeds; one developed necrotising enterocolitis. One hundred and twenty very low birthweight babies (not considered such high risk) were fed without first receiving vancomycin; 17 developed necrotising enterocolitis. Althoug...

What Really Causes Necrotising Enterocolitis?

Background. One of the most serious gastrointestinal disorders occurring in neonates is necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). It is recognised as the most common intra-abdominal emergency and is the leading cause of short bowel syndrome. With extremely high mortality and morbidity, this enigmatic disease remains a challenge for neonatologists around the world as its definite aetiology has yet to be ...

METHODS A prospective, double blind, randomised, placebo controlled study in a tertiary referral centre of a university teaching hospital was conducted on 140 very low birthweight infants consecutively admitted to the neonatal unit. The babies were ra...

Intussusception in preterm infants.

Two cases of intussusception in infants born at 26 and 30 weeks' gestation are described. The two infants presented in the neonatal period with abdominal distension, intolerance of feeds, and rectal bleeding. An initial diagnosis of necrotising enterocolitis was made and the infants were treated medically. This led to a delay in the diagnosis of the intussusception. Published work on neonatal i...

Neonatal aspergillosis accompanying fulminant necrotising enterocolitis.

A preterm infant developed fulminant necrotising enterocolitis, subsequently resulting in death. Necropsy examination showed diffuse aspergillosis. Reports are reviewed, and possible mechanisms resulting in Aspergillus infection in this infant are discussed.

Quantitative changes in faecal microflora preceding necrotising enterocolitis in premature neonates.

Quantitative studies of faecal bacterial flora were carried out during the week preceding the clinical onset of 12 episodes of neonatal necrotising enterocolitis. There were considerable quantitative changes in the faecal flora preceding the clinical onset of both definite and possible episodes of necrotising enterocolitis. There was a decline in the numbers of some species from up to 72 hours ...
