چکیده

We show how to create a novel two-dimensional trap for ultracold atoms from a conventional magnetic trap. We achieve this by utilizing rf-induced adiabatic potentials to enhance the trapping potential in one direction. We demonstrate the loading process and discuss the experimental conditions under which it might be possible to prepare a 2D Bose condensate. A scheme for the preparation of coherent matter-wave bubbles is also discussed.

Atom trapping and two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in field-induced adiabatic potentials

We discuss a method to create two-dimensional ~2D! traps as well as atomic shell, or bubble, states for a Bose-Einstein condensate initially prepared in a conventional magnetic trap. The scheme relies on the use of time-dependent, radio-frequency-induced adiabatic potentials. These are shown to form a versatile and robust tool to generate interesting trapping potentials. Our shell states take t...

Recent developments in trapping and manipulation of atoms with adiabatic potentials

A combination of static and oscillating magnetic fields can be used to ‘dress’ atoms with radiofrequency (RF), or microwave, radiation. The spatial variation of these fields can be used to create an enormous variety of traps for ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases. This article reviews the type and character of these adiabatic traps and the applications which include atom interferometry and the ...

Dynamically Controlled Toroidal and Ring-Shaped Magnetic Traps

We present magnetic traps with toroidal (T ) and ring-shaped topologies. The trapping potential of a ring-shaped magnetic quadrupole field is modified by radio-frequency fields, resulting in adiabatic potentials for the dressed Zeeman states. Simple adjustment of the radio-frequency fields provides versatile possibilities for dynamical parameter tuning, topology change, and controlled potential...

Controlled collisions of a single atom and an ion guided by movable trapping potentials

We consider a system composed of a trapped atom and a trapped ion. The ion charge induces in the atom an electric dipole moment, which attracts it with an r−4 dependence at large distances. In the regime considered here, the characteristic range of the atom-ion interaction is comparable or larger than the characteristic size of the trapping potential, which excludes the application of the conta...

We solve the two-particle s-wave scattering problem for ultracold atom gases confined in arbitrary quasi-one-dimensional trapping potentials, allowing for two different atom species. As a consequence, the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom do not factorize. We derive bound-state solutions and obtain the general scattering solution, which exhibits several resonances in the 1D scatter...
