A direct method for determination of oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in blood.

چکیده
Although satisfactory techniques for the determination of oxygen and carbon dioxide contents of blood have long been available, methods for the determination of gas tensions have been less satisfactory and, in the case of the most frequently used procedures, indirect ((1) pp. 174, 298). The direct methods ((1) p. 309; (2-7)) depend upon the equilibration of a bubble of gas with blood at 37” and analysis of the bubble for carbon dioxide and oxygen. In the method to be described the technical problems inherent in the direct approach are minimized by the use of an instrument recently devised by Roughton and Scholander for micro gasometric analyses (8). The Roughton-Scholander (R-S) syringe, consisting of a syringe to which a calibrated capillary tube has been fused, is used both as equilibration chamber and bubble analyzer.

Synergistic action of myocardial oxygen and carbon dioxide in controlling coronary blood flow.
A two-part experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that myocardial oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, as measured by coronary venous oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, determine coronary blood flow during increases in myocardial oxygen consumption. The left main coronary artery was pump-perfused at constant pressure in closed-chest, anesthetized dogs. Oxygenators in the perfusion circu...

متن کاملApplicability of Rebreathing Method for Determining Mixed Venous Co(2) in Cases of Chronic Pulmonary Disease.
The carbon dioxide tension of oxygenated mixed venous blood has long been used, in normal individuals and frequently in subjects with various forms of disease, in the determination of cardiac output according to the Fick principle. The method of rebreathing mixtures of CO2 and oxygen, for establishing equilibrium between the CO2 tensions of the lungs and the incoming venous blood, and at the sa...
متن کاملModeling of Combustion and Carbon Oxides Formation in Direct Injection Diesel Engine
When looking at the effects of diesel engine exhaust on the environment, it is important to first look at the composition of the exhaust gases. Over 99.5% of the exhaust gases are a combination of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water. With the exception of carbon dioxide, which contributes about 5% of the total volume, the diesel engine exhaust consists of elements which are part of...
متن کاملUse of a combined oxygen and carbon dioxide transcutaneous electrode in the estimation of gas exchange during exercise.
BACKGROUND Accurate and reliable measurement of gas exchange during exercise has traditionally involved arterial cannulation. Non-invasive devices to estimate arterial oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) tensions are now available. A method has been devised and evaluated for measuring gas exchange during exercise with a combined transcutaneous O2 and CO2 electrode. METHODS Symptom limited ex...
