چکیده

We discuss the role of break-up process of a loosely-bound projectile in subbarrier fusion reactions. Coupled-channels calculations are carried out for Be + Pb and 4,6He + U reactions by discretizing in energy the particle continuum states. Our calculations show that the coupling to the break-up channel has two effects, namely the loss of flux and the dynamical modulation of fusion potential. Their net effects differ depending on the energy region. At energies above the Coulomb barrier, the former effect dominates over the latter and cross sections for complete fusion are hindered compared with the no coupling case. On the other hand, at below the barrier, the latter effect is much larger than the former and complete fusion cross sections are enhanced consequently.

Shape and shell-structure of nuclei towards neutron drip line

In nuclei along the β stability line the nucleons are bound at least by 7–10MeV, and the magic numbers in those nuclei are well known as N (or Z) = 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, and 126. In contrast, in nuclei away from the β stability line the presence of nucleons with binding energy much smaller than 8MeV leads to a unique shell-structure. Consequently, magic numbers may be changed and the nuclei, which...

The Pseudo-spin Symmetry in Zr and Sn Isotopes from the Proton Drip Line to the Neutron Drip Line

Based on the Relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, the pseudo-spin approximation in exotic nuclei is investigated in Zr and Sn isotopes from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line. The quality of the pseudo-spin approximation is shown to be connected with the competition between the centrifugal barrier (CB) and the pseudo-spin orbital potential (PSOP). The PSOP depends...

Transfer at sub-barrier energies and its role in understanding the suppression of fusion

Fusion cross section measurements in nuclear reactions of heavy nuclei consistently fall below model predictions at energies both well below and above the fusion barrier. Understanding the physical mechanisms leading to this fusion suppression has been one of the major challenges in nuclear reaction physics [6, 7, 1]. It is crucial for a consistent understanding of nuclear reactions involving b...

Fusion Induced by Radioactive Ion Beams

The use of radioactive beams opens a new frontier for fusion studies. The coupling to the continuum can be explored with very loosely bound nuclei. Experiments were performed with beams of nuclei at or near the proton and neutron drip-lines to measure fusion and associated reactions in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. In addition, the fusion yield is predicted to be enhanced in reactions in...

Upper limit of the lifetime of 16B.

The exact location of the drip lines is one of the most stringent tests of nuclear structure models. The predictions for stability of nuclei along the proton drip line can be tested up to very heavy nuclei. Beyond the proton drip line, the large Coulomb barrier and the angular momentum barrier can lead to very long lifetimes for proton-unbound nuclei ~proton radioactivity! @1#. Several of these...
