Iatrogenic Ulnar Nerve Injury post Laceration Suturing - An Unusual Presentation

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Nerve entrapment while suturing a lacerated wound is a complication that is easily avoidable. We report a case low ulnar nerve palsy due to nerve entrapment while suturing a lacerated wound. CASE REPORT A 48 year old lady came with complaints of pain and a lacerated wound over the dorsomedial aspect of lower third of the left forearm. The lacerated wound was sutured elsewhere one week back. She had fracture of lower third of the ulna which was stabilised with plates and screws using a separate dorsal incision. She developed ulnar claw hand on the third postoperative day. Strength duration curve revealed neurotmesis of ulnar nerve. Ulnar nerve exploration was done and the nerve was found to be ligated at the site of original laceration. The ligature was released and nerve was found to be thinned out at the site. There was no neurological recovery at 5 months follow up and reconstruction procedures in form of tendon tranfer are planned for the patient. CONCLUSION This is a case of iatrogenic ulnar nerve palsy which is very rare in our literature. This can be easily avoided if proper care is taken while suturing the primary laceration. A nerve can be mistakenly sutured for a bleeding vein and proper exposure while suturing will be necessary especially at areas where nerves are superficial.

Pseudoaneurysm formation following a traumatic wrist laceration.
Pseudoaneurysms occur secondary to partial disruption of the arterial wall. They are a commonly described complication of arterial injury, with penetrating injury and iatrogenic arterial catheterization being the most common etiologies in children. Many present weeks to months after the injury, and the initial vascular injury is often missed. The complications of pseudoaneurysm, which include t...
متن کاملIsolated laceration to the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve by a retained foreign body.
This report describes an isolated laceration to the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve by a retained foreign body. The patient sustained a laceration on the ulnar, volar aspect of his palm after a fall on gravel. He presented to the emergency room with motor deficits but a normal sensory examination. No foreign bodies were identified on initial wound exploration or review of plain radiographs...
متن کاملUlnar Nerve Palsy Following Closed Fracture of the Distal Radius: A Report of 2 Cases
Ulnar nerve palsy subsequent to a fracture of the distal radius is extremely rare compared to a median nerve injury. The lesion tends to occur in younger patents with a high-energy mechanism of injury and a severe injury pattern consisting of wide displacement, comminution, combined distal ulnar fracture and open fracture. The mechanism of injury can contribute to a direct contusion and tractio...
متن کاملIatrogenic ulnar nerve injury after pin fixation and after antegrade nailing of supracondylar humeral fractures in children
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ulnar nerve injury may occur after pinning of supracondylar fractures in children. We describe the outcome and compare the rates of iatrogenic injuries to the ulnar nerve in a consecutive series of displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children treated with either crossed pinning or antegrade nailing. METHODS Medical charts of all children sustaining this fractur...

A IRWAY control is one of the most important tenets of anesthetic practice. Asphyxia and tracheal laceration in infants are extremely rare, but life-threatening, complications. Despite many reviews in the literature regarding tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) and esophageal atresia, 4 no case of tracheal injury following the aberrant passage of a gastrostomy catheter has been reported. The presen...
