چکیده

Yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) inert matrix fuel (IMF) fabricated at PSI and irradiated 3 years in the Halden Material Test Reactor (HBWR) since 2000, has been examined by Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) after irradiation and compared with data gained for the unirradiated material. The examined pellet cross-section was estimated to have an equivalent burn-up of 22 MW d kg . EPMA measurements demonstrate that the burn-up was rather flat over more than the half pellet radius. A Pu consumption of about 2.5 wt% has been measured with a higher rate in the fuel border zone. The high fuel temperature is responsible for a certain homogenisation of the mineral phases in the fuel centre region whereas the border zone has remained rather with an as-fabricated phase distribution. The central part was also characterised by a dense porosity distribution as well as a temperature and relocation driven depletion of the volatile fission products Xe and Cs. In addition, SIMS has been realised on the same specimen in order to determine the semi-quantitative distribution of different isotopes in the pellet. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spinel Inert Matrix Fuel Testing at the Hfr Petten

Magnesium aluminate spinel is one of the most investigated inert matrix materials, due to its good physico-chemical stability, resistance against neutron irradiation, and its thermal conductivity comparable with conventional UO2 fuel. At the HFR in Petten various combinations of actinides and spinel have been tested within the EFTTRA programme, with the object to study the transmutation of amer...

The relationship between cellular adhesion and surface roughness in polystyrene modified by microwave plasma radiation

BACKGROUND Surface modification of medical polymers can improve biocompatibility. Pure polystyrene is hydrophobic and cannot provide a suitable environment for cell cultures. The conventional method for surface modification of polystyrene is treatment with plasma. In this study, conventional polystyrene was exposed to microwave plasma treatment with oxygen and argon gases for 30, 60, and 180 se...

Fertile Free Fuels for Plutonium and Minor Actinides Burning in LWRs

The feasibility of using various uranium-free fuels for plutonium incineration in present light water reactors is investigated. Two major categories of inert matrix fuels are studied: composite ceramic fuel particles dispersed in another ceramic matrix (CERCER) and ceramic fuel particles dispersed into a metallic matrix (CERMET). In the category of CERCER, the current world wide research effort...

The relationship between cellular adhesion and surface roughness for polyurethane modified by microwave plasma radiation

Surface modification of medical polymers is carried out to improve biocompatibility. In this study, conventional polyurethane was exposed to microwave plasma treatment with oxygen and argon gases for 30 seconds and 60 seconds. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra investigations of irradiated samples indicated the presence of functional groups. Atomic force microscope i...
