چکیده

We study the behaviour of the Ben-Yishai hypercolumn model (Ben-Yishai et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 92 (1995) 3844) under presentation of oriented stimuli, having extended this model by including plastic a!erent (LGN to cortex) connections. We "nd that Hebbian plasticity creates a self-organising map and show that constraining or modifying the standard Hebb rule in a particular way will lead to a contrast-insensitive tuning width, thus giving an explanation for persistent orientation tuning as observed in the visual cortex. Our analytical results con"rm those of simulations done by Von der Malsburg (Kybernetik 14 (1973) 85) and provide a starting point for further analytical treatment of less restricted stimuli. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Orientation tuning, but not direction selectivity, is invariant to temporal frequency in primary visual cortex.

The activity of neurons in primary visual cortex is influenced by the orientation, contrast, and temporal frequency of a visual stimulus. This raises the question of how these stimulus properties interact to shape neuronal responses. While past studies have shown that the bandwidth of orientation tuning is invariant to stimulus contrast, the influence of temporal frequency on orientation-tuning...

The spatial pattern of response magnitude and selectivity for orientation and direction in cat visual cortex.

Optical imaging studies of orientation and direction preference in visual cortex have typically used vector averaging to obtain angle and magnitude maps. This method has shown half-rotation orientation singularities (pinwheels) located within regions of low orientation vector magnitude. Direction preference is generally orthogonal to orientation preference, but often deviates from this, particu...

Dynamics of Orientation Tuning in Cat V1 Neurons Depend on Location Within Layers and Orientation Maps

Analysis of the timecourse of the orientation tuning of responses in primary visual cortex (V1) can provide insight into the circuitry underlying tuning. Several studies have examined the temporal evolution of orientation selectivity in V1 neurons, but there is no consensus regarding the stability of orientation tuning properties over the timecourse of the response. We have used reverse-correla...

Influence of contrast on orientation and temporal frequency tuning in ferret primary visual cortex.

Neurons in primary visual cortex are highly sensitive to the contrast, orientation, and temporal frequency of a visual stimulus. These three stimulus properties can be varied independently of one another, raising the question of how they interact to influence neuronal responses. We recorded from individual neurons in ferret primary visual cortex to determine the influence of stimulus contrast o...
