چکیده

In this paper, we introduce the octopole moment of the light distribution in galaxies as a probe of the weak lensing shear field. While traditional ellipticity estimates of the local shear derived from the quadrupole moment are limited by the width of the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of background galaxies, the dispersion in the intrinsic octopole distribution is expected to be much smaller, implying that the signal from this higher order moment is ultimately limited by measurement noise, and not by intrinsic scatter. We present the computation of the octopole moment and show that current observations are at the regime where the octopole estimates will soon be able to contribute to the overall accuracy of the estimates of local shear fields. Therefore, the prospects for this estimator from future datasets like the Advanced Camera for Survey and the Next Generation Space Telescope are very promising. Subject headings:

A New Measure for Weak Lensing Flexion

We study a possibility to use the octopole moment of gravitationally lensed images as a direct measure of the third-order weak gravitational lensing effect, or the gravitational flexion. It turns out that there is a natural relation between flexion and certain combinations of octopole/higher-multipole moments which we call the Higher Order Lensing Image’s Characteristics (HOLICs). This will all...

Biased Dark Energy Constraints from Neglecting Reduced Shear in Weak Lensing Surveys

The weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by large-scale structure is expected to become a powerful probe of dark energy. By measuring the ellipticities of large numbers of background galaxies, the subtle gravitational distortion called “cosmic shear” can be measured and used to constrain dark energy parameters. The observed galaxy ellipticities, however, are induced not by shear but b...

An algorithm for the direct reconstruction of the dark matter correlation function from weak lensing and galaxy clustering

The clustering of matter on cosmological scales is an essential probe for studying the physical origin and composition of our Universe. To date, most of the direct studies have focused on shear-shear weak lensing correlations, but it is also possible to extract the dark matter clustering by combining galaxy-clustering and galaxy-galaxy-lensing measurements. In order to extract the required info...

Cosmology with cosmic shear observations: a review.

Cosmic shear is the distortion of images of distant galaxies due to weak gravitational lensing by the large-scale structure in the Universe. Such images are coherently deformed by the tidal field of matter inhomogeneities along the line of sight. By measuring galaxy shape correlations, we can study the properties and evolution of structure on large scales as well as the geometry of the Universe...

Weak lensing power spectra for precision cosmology

It is usually assumed that the ellipticity power spectrum measured in weak lensing observations can be expressed as an integral over the underlying matter power spectrum. This is true at order O(Φ2) in the gravitational potential. We extend the standard calculation, constructing all corrections to order O(Φ4). There are four types of corrections: corrections to the lensing shear due to multiple...
