Aspectual Shifts With and Without Type Conflict

چکیده
The referents of temporally determined sentences are usually talked of as situations (Vendler (1976)). The standard language internal testing procedure for telling apart telic accomplishments and achievements (??) from atelic states and activities (??) uses grammaticality effects in connection with temporal adverbial modification. (1) arrive *for an hour / in an hour play the sonata *for an hour / in an hour (2) be quiet for an hour / *in an hour swim for an hour / *in an hour However, after closer inspection, the marked phrases, far from being ungrammatical, quite naturally display several kinds of readings. Depending on the type of the situation, the focus of the modifier can be switched to the pre-phase, preparatory phase, or result state of the situation, or there appear special effects such as iteration. This phenomenon is known as aspectual shift. Aspectual shifts usually are theoretically handled on the analogy with typecoercion in programming languages (Moens/Steedman (1988)). However, none of the approaches available so far can offer a full theoretical explanation and compositional derivation of the shifted readings (e.g. Pulman (1997), de Swart (1998)). Moreover, there are cases where aspectual shifts take place without there being any conflict in situational type. Take, for instance, the pre-phase-reading of the left-peripheral adverbial construction in (??). Those cases are not treated

A Unification-Based Model of Aspectual Type-Shifting
Coercion is an inferential process through which operator-argument conflicts are resolved in favor of the meaning of the operator, as when frame adverbials impose inchoative readings upon state-type predicates with which they are combined: The ambulance was there in a few minutes. De Swart (1998) represents such effects by means of implicit type-shifting operators that intervene between operato...
متن کاملHandling Conflicts in Aspectual Requirements Compositions
Composing aspectual concerns with base concerns may raise conflicting situations that need to be identified and resolved. A conflict is detected whenever two or more concerns that contribute negatively to each other and have the same importance need to be composed together. This paper discusses the use of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods to support aspectual conflict management ...
متن کاملAspectual Entities and Tense in Discourse
Linguistic expressions form interesting patterns in discourse. In the domain of temporality, the morphemes of tense and aspectual viewpoint pattern significantly within a discourse. Shifts of viewpoint and tense are often associated with shifts of direction, and with the distinction between foreground and background. One important reason for this effect is that aspectual viewpoint and tense for...
متن کاملWhen Events Change Their Nature: The Neurocognitive Mechanisms Underlying Aspectual Coercion
The verb "pounce" describes a single, near-instantaneous event. Yet, we easily understand that, "For several minutes the cat pounced…" describes a situation in which multiple pounces occurred, although this interpretation is not overtly specified by the sentence's syntactic structure or by any of its individual words--a phenomenon known as "aspectual coercion." Previous psycholinguistic studies...
متن کاملAspectual Shift via Supervaluation
Aspectual shifts in connection with temporal adverbial modification usually are treated by close analogy with type-coercion in programming languages. The paper shows that by taking a good metaphor too literally, semantic research so far did not do full justice to the kind of flexibility observable in the natural language examples. A new proposal is developed within the framework of finite-state...
