Testing for Sphericity in a Fixed E¤ects Panel Data Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper proposes a test for the null of sphericity in a xed e¤ects panel data model. It uses the Random Matrix Theory based approach of Ledoit and Wolf (2002) to test for the null of sphericity of the error terms in a xed e¤ects panel model with a large number of cross-sectional units and time series observations. Since the errors are unobservable, the residuals from the xed e¤ects regression are used. The limiting distribution of the proposed test statistic is derived. Additionally, its nite sample properties are examined using Monte Carlo simulations. Keywords: Sphericity; Panel Data; Cross-sectional Dependence; John Test. JEL Classi cation: C13; C33. On Testing for Sphericity with Non-normality in a Fixed Effects Panel Data Model
Building upon the work of Chen et al. (2010), this paper proposes a test for sphericity of the variance-covariance matrix in a fixed effects panel data regression model without the normality assumption on the disturbances.
متن کاملSpatial Panels: Random Components vs. Fixed E¤ects
This paper investigates spatial panel data models with a space-time lter in disturbances. We consider their estimation by both xed e¤ects and random e¤ects speci cations. With a between equation properly de ned, the di¤erence of the random vs. xed e¤ects models can be highlighted. We show that the random e¤ects estimate is a pooling of the within and between estimates. A Hausman type speci c...
متن کاملSemiparametric Estimation of Fixed E ects Panel Data Varying Coe cient Models
We consider the problem of estimating a varying coe cient panel data model with xed effects using a local linear regression approach. Our proposed estimator can consistently estimate the regression model with an additive intercept term, while the conventional estimation method based on a rst di erence model fails to do so. The computed estimator is shown to be asymptotically normally distribute...
متن کاملTesting for Cross-sectional Dependence in Fixed E¤ects Panel Data Models
This paper proposes a new test for cross-sectional dependence in xed e¤ects panel data models. It is well known that ignoring cross-sectional dependence leads to incorrect statistical inference. In the panel data literature, attempts to account for cross-sectional dependence include factor models and spatial correlation. In most cases, strong assumptions on the covariance matrix are imposed. A...
متن کاملEstimation of spatial autoregressive panel data models with xed e¤ects
This paper establishes asymptotic properties of quasi-maximum likelihood estimators for xed e¤ects SAR panel data models with SAR disturbances where the time periods T and/or the number of spatial units n can be nite or large in all combinations except that both T and n are nite. A direct approach is to estimate all the parameters including xed e¤ects. We propose alternative estimation meth...
