Deconvolution-based nonlinear filtering for incompressible flows at moderately large Reynolds numbers

چکیده
SUMMARY We consider a Leray model with a deconvolution-based indicator function for the simulation of incompressible fluid flow at moderately large Reynolds number (in the range of few thousand) with under-resolved meshes. For the implementation of the model, we adopt a three-step algorithm called evolve-filter-relax (EFR) that requires (i) the solution of a Navier-Stokes problem, (ii) the solution of a Stokes-like problem to filter the Navier-Stokes velocity field, and (iii) a final relaxation step. We take advantage of a reformulation of the EFR algorithm as an operator splitting method to analyze the impact of the filter on the final solution vs a direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. In addition, we provide some direction for tuning the parameters involved in the model based on physical and numerical arguments. Our approach is validated against experimental data for fluid flow in an idealized medical device (consisting of a conical convergent, a narrow throat, and a sudden expansion, as recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration). Numerical results are in good quantitative agreement with the measured axial components of the velocity and pressures for two different flow rates corresponding to turbulent regimes, even for meshes with a mesh size more than 40 times larger than the smallest turbulent scale. After several numerical experiments, we perform a preliminary sensitivity analysis of the computed solution to the parameters involved in the model.

متن کاملLarge Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flows by the Rational LES Model
The rational large eddy simulation (RLES) model is applied to turbulent channel flows. This approximate deconvolution model is based on a rational (subdiagonal Padé) approximation of the Fourier transform of the Gaussian filter and is proposed as an alternative to the gradient (also known as the nonlinear or tensor-diffusivity) model. We used a spectral element code to perform large eddy simula...

In this research, a new multidimensional characteristic based upwind scheme for the solution of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The incompressible flow equations have been coupled each other by the aid of artificial compressibility method. Unlike to the traditional characteristic based (CB) schemes, the present scheme is genuinely multidimensional in that the local charact...

The research work reported in the present dissertation is aimed at the analysis of complex physical phenomena involving instabilities and nonlinearities occurring in fluids through state-of-the-art numerical modeling. Solutions of intricate fluid physics problems are devised in two particularly arduous situations: fluid domains with moving boundaries and the high-Reynolds-number regime dominate...
متن کاملA connection between filter stabilization and eddy viscosity models
Recently, a new approach for the stabilization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for higher Reynolds numbers was introduced based on the nonlinear differential filtering of solutions on every time step of a discrete scheme. In this paper, the stabilization is shown to be equivalent to a certain eddy-viscosity model in LES. This allows a refined analysis and further understanding of ...
