چکیده

High energy photons are a powerful probe for astrophysics and for fundamental physics under extreme conditions. During the recent years, our knowledge of the most violent phenomena in the Universe has impressively progressed thanks to the advent of new detectors for high energy gamma rays. Observation of γ-rays gives an exciting view of the high energy universe thanks to the current (AGILE) and future (GLAST) satellite-based telescopes and to the current and future groundbased detectors like the Cherenkov telescopes (H.E.S.S. and MAGIC in particular), which discovered in the recent years more than 60 new very-high energy sources. The progress achieved with the last generation of Cherenkov telescopes is comparable to the one drawn by EGRET with respect to the previous γ-ray satellite detectors. This article reviews the present status of high-energy gamma astrophysics, with emphasis on the recent results and on the experimental developments.

Recent Topics from Very High Energy Gamma-ray Astro- physics

Recent results from very high energy gamma-ray astrophysics are presented. Topics are selected mainly from observations of TeV gamma-rays with atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes covering galactic and extragalactic sources.

TeV Gamma-Ray Astrophysics

The window of TeV Gamma-Ray Astrophysics was opened less than two decades ago, when the Crab Nebula was detected for the first time. After several years of development, the technique used by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes like HESS, MAGIC or VERITAS, is now allowing to conduct sensitive observations in the TeV regime. Water Cherenkov instruments like Milagro are also providing the fir...

What Are Gamma-Ray Bursts? The Unique Role of Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Observations

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been an enigma since their discovery forty years ago. However, considerable progress unraveling their mysteries has been made in recent years. Developments in observations, theory, and instrumentation have prepared the way so that the next decade can be the one in which we finally answer the question, “What are gamma-ray bursts?” This question encompasses not only w...

0 Status of VHE Astronomy c . 2000

As we enter a new century of high energy astrophysics, it behooves us to consider briefly how far we have come and far we have yet to go. It is some 47 years since Galbraith and Jelley mounted a ten inch mirror in a garbage can with a photomul-tiplier at its focus and under the impossibly damp skies of the Berkshires detected the first Cherenkov light pulses from air showers [1]. Within a decad...

The Energy Resolution of The MAGIC Telescope

In the field of gamma-rays Astrophysics in the – energy domain, the understanding of spectra of detected gamma rays is necessary in developing models for acceleration, emission, absorption and propagation of very high energy particles in their sources and in space. Therefore, high precision in the measurement of the energy of observed gammas is important. On the example of the 17 ø MAGIC telesc...
