چکیده

Projections of future climate change caused by increasing greenhouse gases depend critically on numerical climate models coupling the ocean and atmosphere (GCMs). However, different models differ substantially in their projections, which raises the question of how the different models can best be combined into a probability distribution of future climate change. For this analysis, we have collected both current and future projected mean temperatures produced by nine climate models for 22 regions of the earth. We also have estimates of current mean temperatures from actual observations, together with standard errors, that can be used to calibrate the climate models. We propose a Bayesian analysis that allows us to combine the different climate models into a posterior distribution of future temperature increase, for each of the 22 regions, while allowing for the different climate models to have different variances. Two versions of the analysis are proposed, a univariate analysis in which each region is analyzed separately, and a multivariate analysis in which the 22 regions are combined into an overall statistical model. A cross-validation approach is proposed to confirm the reasonableness of our Bayesian predictive distributions. The results of this analysis allow for a quantification of the uncertainty of climate model projections as a Bayesian posterior distribution, substantially extending previous approaches to uncertainty in climate models. ∗Department of Statistics and Operations Research, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3260 †National Center for Atmospheric Research, P.O. Characterizing the Uncertainty of Climate Change Projections Using Hierarchical Models

We present a suite of Bayesian hierarchical models that synthesize ensembles of climate model simulations, with the aim of reconciling different future projections of climate change, while characterizing their uncertainty in a rigorous fashion. Posterior distributions of future temperature and/or precipitation changes at regional scales are obtained, accounting for many peculiar data characteri...

Uncertainty Modeling of a Group Tourism Recommendation System Based on Pearson Similarity Criteria, Bayesian Network and Self-Organizing Map Clustering Algorithm

Group tourism is one of the most important tasks in tourist recommender systems. These systems, despite of the potential contradictions among the group's tastes, seek to provide joint suggestions to all members of the group, and propose recommendations that would allow the satisfaction of a group of users rather than individual user satisfaction. Another issue that has received less attention i...

Rule-based joint fuzzy and probabilistic networks

One of the important challenges in Graphical models is the problem of dealing with the uncertainties in the problem. Among graphical networks, fuzzy cognitive map is only capable of modeling fuzzy uncertainty and the Bayesian network is only capable of modeling probabilistic uncertainty. In many real issues, we are faced with both fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainties. In these cases, the propo...

A Bayesian posterior predictive framework for weighting ensemble regional climate models

We present a novel Bayesian statistical approach to computing model weights in climate change projection ensembles in order to create probabilistic projections. The weight of each climate model is obtained by weighting the current day observed data under the posterior distribution admitted under competing climate models. We use a linear model to describe the model output and observations. The a...

A Surface Water Evaporation Estimation Model Using Bayesian Belief Networks with an Application to the Persian Gulf

Evaporation phenomena is a effective climate component on water resources management and has special importance in agriculture. In this paper, Bayesian belief networks (BBNs) as a non-linear modeling technique provide an evaporation estimation  method under uncertainty. As a case study, we estimated the surface water evaporation of the Persian Gulf and worked with a dataset of observations ...
