Coordinated control of an underwater glider fleet in an adaptive ocean sampling field experiment in Monterey Bay

چکیده
A full-scale adaptive ocean sampling network was deployed throughout the month-long 2006 Adaptive Sampling and Prediction (ASAP) field experiment in Monterey Bay, California. One of the central goals of the field experiment was to test and demonstrate newly developed techniques for coordinated motion control of autonomous vehicles carrying environmental sensors to efficiently sample the ocean. We describe the field results for the heterogeneous fleet of autonomous underwater gliders that collected data continuously throughout the month-long experiment. Six of these gliders were coordinated autonomously for twenty-four days straight using scalable feedback laws. These feedback laws were systematically computed using recently developed methodology to produce desired collective motion patterns, tuned to the spatial and temporal scales in the sampled fields for the purpose of reducing statistical uncertainty in field estimates. The implementation was designed to allow for adaptation of coordinated sampling patterns using human-in-the-loop decision making, guided by optimization and prediction tools. The results demonstrate an innovative tool for ocean sampling and provide a proof-of-concept for an important field robotics endeavor that integrates coordinated motion control with adaptive sampling.

Coordination of an Underwater Glider Fleet for Adaptive Ocean Sampling
The Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network-II (AOSN-II) and Adaptive Sampling And Prediction (ASAP) projects aim to develop a sustainable, portable, adaptive ocean observing and prediction system for use in coastal environments. These projects employ, among other observation platforms, autonomous underwater vehicles that carry sensors to measure physical and biological signals in the ocean. The meas...
متن کاملAdaptive Sampling Using Feedback Control of an Autonomous Underwater Glider Fleet
In this paper we present strategies for adaptive sampling using Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) fleets. The central theme of our strategies is the use of feedback that integrates distributed in-situ measurements into a coordinated mission planner. The measurements consist of GPS updates and estimated gradients of the environmental fields (e.g., temperature) that are used to navigate the AUV...

The potential for using synergistic combinations of measurements from autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and output from three-dimensional numerical models for studying the central California coastal region is demonstrated. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach. In the first, propeller-driven AUV observations revealed a subsurface salinity minimum in northern Monterey Bay. A R...
متن کاملAn Approach for Operation Depth Reduction of an Underwater Glider Propelled by Ocean Thermal Energy
The underwater Gliders are a kind of autonomous vehicles that have a special role in ocean surveys which demand continuous monitoring and long endurance. Because of low energy consumption and long endurance, these vehicles are favorite for these missions. Among this, a type of gliders can harvest ocean thermal energy, causing significant endurance increase. These vehicles need at least 680 mete...
متن کاملUnderwater Glider Networks for Adaptive Ocean Sampling
The long-term goal of this research is to enable a cooperating group of underwater gliders to perform efficiently and robustly as an autonomous, adaptive sampling network in a three-dimensional, dynamic ocean environment. This will involve developing the mathematical infrastructure and design tools for effecting feedback-controlled, schooling-like network behavior in an unsteady flow field whil...
