چکیده

Shearing ewes in mid pregnancy can provide farmers with management and financial advantages. Six experiments conducted at Massey University have collectively shown that shearing ewes at this time can increase lamb birthweight by up to 1.0 kg. When comparisons were made across studies, there was a strong negative relationship between size of the response and the birthweight of control lambs (those from unshorn ewes). The best time to shear ewes to gain a maximum response is likely to be pregnancy day 50 to 100. In a large field trial involving 1002 twin-born lambs, there was a 3% reduction in mortality rate in lambs born to ewes shorn at pregnancy day 67 compared with those lambs born to unshorn ewes (i.e., mortality rates of 15 vs 18%). Pre-lamb shearing offers real advantages to farmers wishing to increase lamb survival at birth.

The effect of mid-pregnancy shearing on lamb birthweight and survival to weaning

Mid-pregnancy shearing has been promoted in New Zealand as a technique to improve both lamb birthweights and survival. In the literature mid-pregnancy shearing has resulted in an increase lamb birthweight. However, the results have been inconsistent in magnitude and birthrank specificity. Additionally the mechanism responsible for the birthweight response has not been identified. The objectives...

Inbreeding effects on lamb pre-weaning growth traits and survival in three Iranian sheep breeds

The present study was performed to study the effect of inbreeding on the pre-weaning growth traits including the birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), average daily gain (ADG), Kleiber ratio (KR) and lamb survival from birth to weaning (SUR) in Baluchi, Iran-Black and Zandi sheep. Significant positive inbreeding trends were found only for Baluchi and Iran-Black breeds as 0.038 and 0.278, resp...

The birthweight and survival of Merino lambs can be predicted from the profile of liveweight change of their mothers during pregnancy

The single largest influence on the survival of lambs in thefirst few days of life is their birthweight. Fetal growth and birthweight are regulated by genotype of the fetus, maternal genotype, maternal nutrition and the external environment. In this paper we report the extent to which the changes in maternal liveweight during pregnancy and lactation (liveweight profile) ofMerino ewes can be use...

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Survival and Birth Weight in Moghani Sheep

Genetic parameters for birth weight and survival traits were estimated using data collected from 1995 to 2009 in Jafarabad Moghani Sheep Breeding Station. Number of observation for survival and birth weight were 7202 and 6585, respectively. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure under 16 different models, including animal, threshold and sire mod...

Feeding and Managing the Ewe Flock: A New Watch

The number of lambs sold per ewe mated in the breeding flock has a considerable impact on sheep operation profitability. This depends primarily on fertility, prolificacy (# of lambs), and lamb survival, mothering ability, milk production of the ewe and lamb growth rate. Optimal reproduction does vary by environment and management system – some sheep operations don’t want a lambing rate over 200...
