Explaining Compound Critiquing

چکیده
Interactive recommender applications are an important technology for online retailers who want to increase their sales by providing potential buyers with suitable recommendations. Critique-based navigation, where a user applies a directional critique to a specific feature of a presented recommendation, is often used to guide users through such complex product spaces. Dynamic critiquing is a novel extension of this approach, where users are presented with compound critiques that reflect the product options that are available in a given cycle of a recommendation session. We believe that these compound critiques have considerable explanatory capability. In this paper we are interested in how these kind of explanations can be used to help the user to better understand, and effectively navigate, complex product spaces in interactive recommender systems by understanding the trade-offs/inter-dependencies that might exist between product features. We present sample screen-shots from a purpose-built prototype application to illustrate the potential benefits of

Collaborative Compound Critiquing
Critiquing-based recommender systems offer users a conversational paradigm to provide their feedback, named critiques, during the process of viewing the current recommendation. In this way, the system is able to learn and adapt to the users’ preferences more precisely so that better recommendation could be returned in the subsequent iteration. Moreover, recent works on experience-based critiqui...

Critiquing is a powerful style of feedback for case-based recommender systems. Instead of providing detailed feature values, users indicate a directional preference for a feature. For example, a user might ask for a ‘less expensive’ restaurant in a restaurant recommender; ‘less expensive’ is a critique over the price feature. The value of critiquing is that it is generally applicable over a wid...
متن کاملOn the Evaluation of Dynamic Critiquing: A Large-Scale User Study
Critiquing is an important form of feedback in conversational recommender systems. However, in these systems the user is usually limited to critiquing a single product feature at a time. Recently dynamic critiquing has been proposed to address this shortcoming, by automatically generating compound critiques over multiple features that may be presented to the user at recommendation time. To date...
متن کاملOn the Generation of Diverse Compound Critiques?
Critiquing is a powerful form of feedback often used by conversational recommender systems. There are two main types of critiquing; unit and compound. Unit critiques allow the user to provide limited feedback at the feature-level by constraining a single feature’s value space. Compound critiques, on the other hand, allow the user to manipulate multiple features simultaneously and therefore can ...
متن کاملDynamic Critiquing: An Analysis of Cognitive Load
Conversational recommender systems solicit feedback from users in order to objectively inform the recommendation process. Ideally the user is presented with suitable products/services as promptly, as possible. Efficiency is key, and normally, this is measured in terms of the session length (i.e., the number of recommendation cycles with the user). In this paper we argue that it is also importan...
