Distance estimates for Poisson process approximations of dependent thinnings

چکیده

It is well known, that under certain conditions, gradual thinning of a point process on R+, accompanied by a contraction of space to compensate for the thinning, leads in the weak limit to a Cox process. In this article, we apply discretization and a result based on Stein’s method to give estimates of the Barbour-Brown distance d2 between the distribution of a thinned point process and an approximating Poisson process, and evaluate the estimates in concrete examples. We work in terms of two, somewhat different, thinning models. The main model is based on the usual thinning notion of deleting points independently according to probabilities supplied by a random field. In Section 4, however, we use an alternative thinning model, which can be more straightforward to apply if the thinning is determined by point interactions.

Distance estimates for dependent thinnings of point processes with densities

In [Schuhmacher, Electron. J. Probab. 10 (2005), 165–201] estimates of the Barbour-Brown distance d2 between the distribution of a thinned point process and the distribution of a Poisson process were derived by combining discretization with a result based on Stein’s method. In the present article we concentrate on point processes that have a density with respect to a Poisson process, for which ...

Two Moments Suffice for Poisson Approximations: the Chen-stein Method

Convergence to the Poisson distribution, for the number of occurrences of dependent events, can often be established by computing only first and second moments, but not higher ones. This remarkable result is due to Chen (1975). The method also provides an upper bound on the total variation distance to the Poisson distribution, and succeeds in cases where third and higher moments blow up. This p...

Bayesian change point estimation in Poisson-based control charts

Precise identification of the time when a process has changed enables process engineers to search for a potential special cause more effectively. In this paper, we develop change point estimation methods for a Poisson process in a Bayesian framework. We apply Bayesian hierarchical models to formulate the change point where there exists a step < /div> change, a linear trend and a known multip...

Extensions to Study Electrochemical Interfaces - A Contribution to the Theory of Ions

In the present study an alternative model allows the extension of the Debye-Hückel Theory (DHT) considering time dependence explicitly. From the Electro-Quasistatic approach (EQS) done in earlier studies time dependent potentials are suitable to describe several phenomena especially conducting media as well as the behaviour of charged particles in arbitrary solutions acting as electrolytes. Thi...

Coupling and Poisson Approximation

We give an overview of the Stein{Chen method for establishing Poisson approximations of various random variables. Couplings of certain variables are used to gives explicit bounds for the total variation distance between the distribution of a random variable and a Poisson variable. Some applications are given. In some cases, explicit couplings may be used to obtain good estimates; in other appli...
