چکیده

We report the discovery of additional hot and massive stars in the cluster surrounding the soft gamma repeater SGR 1806−20, based upon UKIRT and Keck near-infrared spectroscopy. Of the newly identified stars, three are Wolf-Rayet stars of types WC8, WN6, and WN7, and a fourth star is an OB supergiant. These three stars, along with four previously discovered, imply a cluster age of∼3.04.5 Myr, based on the presence of WC stars and the absence of red supergiants. Assuming coevality, this age suggests that the progenitor of SGR 1806−20 had an initial mass greater than ∼50 M⊙. This is consistent with the suggestion that SGRs are post-supernovae end states of massive progenitors, and may suggest that only massive stars evolve into magnetars that produce SGRs. It also suggests that very massive stars can evolve into neutron stars, not just black holes, as recently predicted by theory. The cluster age also provides constraints on the very high mass object, LBV 1806−20. Subject headings: stars: evolution — stars: neutron — stars: individual (LBV1806-20) — stars: individual (SGR 1806−20) — infrared: stars

The Discovery of an Embedded Cluster of High-Mass Stars near SGR 1900+14.

Deep I-band imaging to I approximately 26.5 of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14 region has revealed a compact cluster of massive stars located only a few arcseconds from the fading radio source thought to be the location of the soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR). This cluster was previously hidden in the glare of the pair of M5 supergiant stars (whose light was removed by point-spread functio...

A downward revision to the distance of the 1806–20 cluster and associated magnetar from Gemini near-Infrared spectroscopy

We present Hand K-band spectroscopy of OB and Wolf-Rayet (WR) members of the Milky Way cluster 1806–20 (G10.0–0.3), to obtain a revised cluster distance of relevance to the 2004 giant flare from the SGR 1806–20 magnetar. From GNIRS spectroscopy obtained with Gemini South, four candidate OB stars are confirmed as late O/early B supergiants, while we support previous mid WN and late WC classifica...

Contamination of short GRBs by giant magnetar flares: significance of downwards revision in distance to SGR 1806-20

We highlight how the downward revision in the distance to the star cluster associated with SGR1806–20 by Bibby et al. reconciles the apparent low contamination of BATSE short GRBs by intense flares from extragalactic magnetars without recourse to modifying the frequency of one such flare per 30 years per Milky Way galaxy. We also discuss the variety in progenitor initial masses of magnetars bas...

Precise Chandra Localization of the Soft Gamma - ray Repeater SGR 1806 − 20

We present observations of the Soft γ-ray Repeater SGR 1806−20 taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We identify the X-ray counterpart of SGR 1806−20 based on detection of 7.5-s pulsations. Using three unrelated X-ray sources (and USNO stars) as position references, we are able to determine that the SGR is at α2000 = 18 0839. 32 and δ2000 = −2
