(1) A Riemann surface X is a connected complex manifold of dimension 1. This means that X is a connected Hausdorff space, locally homeomorphic to R, which is equipped with a complex structure {(Ui, zi)}. Here each Ui is an open subset of X , the union ⋃ Ui is X , each local coordinate zi : Ui ∼= −→ D is a homeomorphism, and whenever Ui ∩Uj 6= ∅ the change of coordinate zjz−1 i : zi(Ui ∩Uj) → zj(Ui ∩Uj) is holomorphic.
