چکیده

While atypical mass strandings of beaked whales have been linked to naval exercises using midfrequency sonar, the causal chain of events from sound exposure to stranding has not been elucidated. We now know that beaked whales react strongly to sonar, killer whale calls, and bandlimited noise by ceasing echolocation and completing an unusually slow, directional ascent, in many cases leaving the area entirely (Pirotta et al., 2012; Tyack et al., 2011). Less is known about potential risks to other species of odontocetes overlapping with navy exercises. This project is part of a collaborative research program with the goals to:

FINAL REPORT Tagging and Playback Studies to Toothed Whales

Intense ultrasonic clicks from echolocating toothed whales do not elicit anti-predator responses or debilitate the squid Loligo pealeii.

Toothed whales use intense ultrasonic clicks to echolocate prey and it has been hypothesized that they also acoustically debilitate their prey with these intense sound pulses to facilitate capture. Cephalopods are an important food source for toothed whales, and there has probably been an evolutionary selection pressure on cephalopods to develop a mechanism for detecting and evading sound-emitt...

Bayesian three-dimensional reconstruction of toothed whale trajectories: passive acoustics assisted with visual and tagging measurements.

The author describes and evaluates a Bayesian method to reconstruct three-dimensional toothed whale trajectories from a series of echolocation signals. Localization by using passive acoustic data (time of arrival of source signals at receptors) is assisted by using visual data (coordinates of the whale when diving and resurfacing) and tag information (movement statistics). The efficiency of the...

Molecular phylogeny of cetaceans prompts revision of morphological transformations.

The echolocating toothed whales and the filter-feeding baleen whales are traditionally considered as two monophyletic lineages that originated from the extinct cetacean suborder Archaeoceti. While current interpretation of the morphological and behavioural data sets supports toothed-whale monophyly, molecular phylogenies contradict this long-accepted taxonomic subdivision. The molecular data in...

Amazon river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) use a high-frequency short-range biosonar.

Toothed whales produce echolocation clicks with source parameters related to body size; however, it may be equally important to consider the influence of habitat, as suggested by studies on echolocating bats. A few toothed whale species have fully adapted to river systems, where sonar operation is likely to result in higher clutter and reverberation levels than those experienced by most toothed...
