Identifying Relevant Prior Explanations
نویسنده
چکیده
When human tutors engage in dialogue, they freely exploit all aspects of the mutually known context, including the previous discourse. Utterances that do not draw on previous discourse seem awkward, unnatural, or even incoherent. Previous discourse must be taken into account in order to relate new information effectively to recently conveyed material , and to avoid repeating old material that would distract the student from what is new. Producing a system that displays such behavior involves finding an efficient way to identify which previous explanations (if any) are relevant to the current explanation task. Thus, we axe implementing a system that uses a case-based reasoning approach to identify previous situations and explanations that could potentially affect the explanation being constructed. We have identified heuris-tics for constructing explanations that exploit this information in ways similar to what we have observed in human-human tutorial dialogues.

Indexing And Exploiting A Discourse History To Generate Context-Sensitive Explanations
A slriking difference between the interactions that students have with human tutors and those they have with computer-based instruction systems is that human tutors frequently refer to their own previous explanations. Based on a study of human-human instructional interactions, we are categorizing the uses of previous discourse and are developing a computational model of this behavior. In this p...

Background: Makhaarej Al-Horouf, the study of speech sounds by Avicenna is a valuable piece of work in the study of speech sounds, which was written about ten centuries ago. It contains six chapters on sound, anatomy of vocal tract, and phonetics. It is amazing to find that Avicenna’s explanations are congruent with the findings of modern scholarship in relevant topics. The study was intended t...
متن کاملExtracting Plausible Explanations of Anomalous Data
We present a perspective on theory revision that characterizes the resulting revisions as explanations of anomalous data (i.e., data that contradict a given model). Additionally, we emphasize the plausibility of these explanations as opposed to the performance of a revised model. An explanation generator implementing (part of) John Stuart Mill’s Method of Induction was constructed that divides ...
متن کاملUsing Goals and Experience to Guide Abduction1
Standard methods for abductive understanding are neutral to prior experience and current goals. Candidate explanations are built from scratch by backwards chaining, without considering how similar situations were previously explained, and selection of the candidate to accept is based on its likelihood, without considering the information needs beyond routine understanding. Problems arise when a...
