چکیده

It is known that the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon induces marked climate variability across many parts of the world. However, in seeking useful relationships between ENSO and climate, several indices are available. In addition to the choice of index, previous studies assessing ENSO effects have employed a range of different methods to classify periods as El Nino, La Nina or Neutral. It is therefore clear that significant subjectivity exists in the adoption of ENSO classification schemes. In this study, several ENSO classification methods are applied to a range of ENSO indices. Each method-index combination is investigated to determine which provides the strongest relationship with rainfall and runoff in the Williams River catchment, New South Wales, Australia. The results demonstrate substantial differences between the methods and indices. The Multivariate ENSO Index (or MEI) is found to provide the best classification irrespective of method. The potential for forecasting ENSO-related effects on rainfall, runoff and river abstractions is then investigated. A "rise rule" to account for dynamic ENSO trends is also assessed. Strong relationships were found to exist with runoff (rainfall) up to nine (eight) months in advance of the Summer/autumn period. Implications for improved forecasting of potential river abstractions are apparent.

Hydrological implications of the Southern Oscillation: variability of the rainfall-runoff relationship

A connection between El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and weather phenomena in eastern Australia has been recognized for several decades. However, little work has been devoted to addressing how this correlation affects hydrological system behaviour within regional-scale catchments. In this study, spatially distributed ENSO effects are evaluated in terms of monthly rainfall, evaporation, stre...

Giuh- Gciuh Comparison for Two Watersheds in Iran (RESEARCH NOTE)

Two representative watersheds, Ammameh and Kasilian, located in Southern and Norten Elborz mountain in Iran respectively were considered. Fourteen events of rainfall-runoff in nonmelting seaons were chosen and their storms and flood hydrographs were gathered from an automatic recording station. Base flow separation was made by recession limb analysis while Philip equation was used for the calcu...

Rainfall-runoff process modeling using time series transfer function

Extended Abstract 1- Introduction Nowadays, forecasting and modeling the rainfall-runoff process is essential for planning and managing water resources. Rainfall-Runoff hydrologic models provide simplified characterizations of the real-world system. A wide range of rainfall-runoff models is currently used by researchers and experts. These models are mainly developed and applied for simulation...

The Effect of Rainfall Parameters on Runoff Using Wavelet Coherence Measure

In this research wavelet coherence measure is implemented for evaluating the relations and effect of rainfall parameters over many years on runoff fluctuations that is for testing proposed linkages between two time series. In this way, monthly Hydro climatological as 3 rainfall stations, one runoff in the outlet of Ardabil plain were used. The results illustrate that 8-12 and 8-16 month modes o...

Studying the Relationship between Environmental Factors, Runoff Characteristics and Infiltration Depth Using Rainfall Simulator in Northwestern Rangelands of Iran

Runoff leads to the leaching of soil nutrients, transports the topsoil particles and deposits the sediments in water reservoirs. Recognition of different environmental factors affecting the runoff properties and water infiltration depth has a great importance concerning soil for the integrated management of watershed and the distinguishment of complex hydrological processes. Thus, this research...
