Estimating suspended sediment concentrations in turbid coastal waters of the Santa Barbara Channel with SeaWiFS

چکیده
A technique is presented for estimating suspended sediment concentrations of turbid coastal waters with remotely sensed multi-spectral data. The method improves upon many standard techniques, since it incorporates analyses of multiple wavelength bands (four for Sea-viewingWide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS)) and a nonlinear calibration, which produce highly accurate results (expected errors are approximately ¡10%). Further, potential errors produced by erroneous atmospheric calibration in excessively turbid waters and influences of dissolved organic materials, chlorophyll pigments and atmospheric aerosols are limited by a dark pixel subtraction and removal of the violet to blue wavelength bands. Results are presented for the Santa Barbara Channel, California where suspended sediment concentrations ranged from 0–200zmg l (¡20mg l) immediately after large river runoff events. The largest plumes were observed 10–30 km off the coast and occurred immediately following large El Niño winter floods.

The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) Sea viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS) began operational measurement of ocean colour in September 1997. Upgrades to the SeaWiFS data processing system (SeaDAS) have occurred frequently and the effects of these revisions on the remotely sensed estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration (chl-a) have been significant. Measurements of ch...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters
Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...

The suspended particle assemblage in complex coastal waters is a mixture of living phytoplankton, other autochthonous matter, and materials of terrestrial origin. The characterization of suspended particles is important for understanding regional primary productivity and rates of carbon sequestration, the fate of anthropogenic materials released to the coastal environment, as well as its effect...

Relationships and variability of bio-optical properties in coastal waters are investigated. Optical proxies indicate that these coastal waters are optically complex and highly variable and are categorized as follows: (1) relatively clear and dominated by high index of refraction, biogenic particles, (2) more turbid, consisting of mostly inorganic particles and little phytoplankton, (3) extremel...

Abstract In the present study, sampling and analysis of size-fractionated suspended particulate matter (SPM) in coastal waters of Chabahar Bay have been done for the first time. Sampling has been conducted on December 25 of 2018 from 5 stations in different locations of the Bay in order to evaluate the effects of natural and human activities on SPM mass and composition. With an overall average...
