An overlapping Schwarz method for spectral element solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

چکیده
Efficient solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in complex domains is dependent upon the availability of fast solvers for sparse linear systems. For unsteady incompressible flows, the pressure operator is the leading contributor to stiffness, as the characteristic propagation speed is infinite. In the context of operator splitting formulations, it is the pressure solve which is the most computationally challenging, despite its elliptic origins. We examine several preconditioners for the consistent L2 Poisson operator arising in the lPN − lPN−2 spectral element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We develop a finite element based additive Schwarz preconditioner using overlapping subdomains plus a coarse grid projection operator which is applied directly to the pressure on the interior Gauss points. For large two-dimensional problems this approach can yield as much as a five-fold reduction in simulation time over previously employed methods based upon deflation. To appear in J. of Comp. A Schwarz Preconditioner for the Cubed-Sphere
A spectral element formulation of the atmospheric two-dimensional shallow water equations on the cubed-sphere is described. The equations are written in tensor form using the contravariant and covariant velocity components. A semi-implicit time discretization results in a reduced Schur complement system for the pressure. The Laplacian operator is approximated by the L2 pseudo-Laplacian arising ...
متن کاملHybrid Schwarz-Multigrid Methods for the Spectral Element Method: Extensions to Navier-Stokes
The performance of multigrid methods for the standard Poisson problem and for the consistent Poisson problem arising in spectral element discretizations of the Navier-Stokes equations is investigated. It is demonstrated that overlapping additive Schwarz methods are effective smoothers, provided that the solution in the overlap region is weighted by the inverse counting matrix. It is also shown ...
متن کاملOn Schwarz Alternating Methods for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
The Schwarz alternating method can be used to solve linear elliptic boundary value problems on domains which consist of two or more overlapping subdomains. The solution is approximated by an innnite sequence of functions which result from solving a sequence of elliptic boundary value problems in each of the subdomains. This paper considers four Schwarz alternating methods for the N-dimensional,...
متن کاملA Parallel Nonlinear Additive Schwarz Preconditioned Inexact Newton Algorithm for Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations ?
A nonlinear additive Schwarz preconditioned inexact Newton method (ASPIN) was introduced recently for solving large sparse highly nonlinear system of equations obtained from the discretization of nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we discuss some extensions of ASPIN for solving the steady-state incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with high Reynolds numbers in the veloci...
متن کاملHybrid and Multiplicative Overlapping Schwarz Algorithms with Standard Coarse Spaces for Mixed Linear Elasticity and Stokes Problems
The goal of this work is to construct and study hybrid and multiplicative two-level overlapping Schwarz algorithms with standard coarse spaces for the almost incompressible linear elasticity and Stokes systems, discretized by mixed finite and spectral element methods with discontinuous pressures. Two different approaches are considered to solve the resulting saddle point systems: a) a precondit...
