چکیده
Objective: The present study attempts to determine normal values of CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8 ratio, total WBC and differential counts, hematocrit and total lymphocyte count (TLC) in healthy HIV sero-negative and sero-positive subjects, and to assess the prognostic significance of these parameters in these subjects as compared to AIDS subjects. Material and Methods: A total of 300 subjects (147 M, 153 F) aged between 17 and 71 years were recruited into the study. Subjects were separated according to sex and divided into three groups: Group A: healthy HIV sero-negative subjects; Group B: healthy HIV sero-positive newly diagnosed ART-naïve subjects; and Group C: AIDS subjects. CD4 and CD8 counts were determined by flow cytometry; hematocrit was determined using Hawksley micro-capillary tubes; total WBC and differential counts were determined manually with the improved Neubauer counting chamber; and TLC was obtained by multiplying the percentage of lymphocytes by the total WBC count. Results: For male subjects, significant differences were found in CD4 count, CD4/CD8 count ratio, hematocrit, total WBC and TLC, whereas for female subjects, significant differences were found only in CD4 and CD4/CD8 count ratio in the three groups of subjects. In both sexes, however, these parameters were found to be highest in healthy HIV sero-negative subjects and lowest in AIDS subjects, with HIV sero-positive subjects having intermediate values. Conclusion: The results confirm previous reports that the CD4 count and CD4/CD8 count ratio are fairly reliable indicators of the progression of HIV infection. In addition, the results also apparently suggest that the prognostic value of CD8 count is limited and that of TLC possibly sex-dependent. The results could be of importance in our environment since previous reports have been relatively scarce. (Turk J Hematol 2008; 25: 181-6)

Sero-prevelance of Cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma Infections among Newly Diagnosed HIV Patients in Iran; Assessing the Correlation with CD4+ Cell Counts
Background and Objective: Opportunistic infections are the leading cause of death among patients subjected to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The aim of this study was to compare the seroprevalence of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and toxoplasmosis infection in newly diagnosed HIV infected patients with healthy controls and it’s correlat...
متن کاملReference Values of Lymphocyte Sub-Populations in Healthy Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Negative Iranian Adults
Background: Lymphocyte subsets enumeration is considered prominent in the management of primary and acquired immunodeficiency disorders. Because of local variations due to race, age, gender, and environmental conditions on lymphocyte subsets, and to improve the accuracy of interpretation of laboratory findings, reference intervals must be determined in every population. Objective: To establish ...

Background : Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a plasma derived product. IVIG has been used in treatment of autoimmune, immunodeficiency and infectious diseases. In this study we assessed the effect of intravenous immunoglobulin administration on WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts as well as the percent of CD4 and CD8 T-cell lymphocytes and number of lymphocytes in pediatric...
متن کاملInverted CD4+/CD8+ ratio associated with AIDS event and death in HIV-1 infected individuals in Nasarawa State, Nigeria.
The current guidelines for the use of antiretroviral therapy in Nigeria places emphasis on the use of CD4+ enumeration to take decision of initiating antiretroviral therapy and HIV disease monitoring. CD4+ counts are known to be inherently inconsistent and therefore could be misleading. This study was undertaken to analyze the CD4+/CD8+ ratio vis-à-vis CD4+ in HIV-1 infected individual in North...

It has been suggested that prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation may induce immune alteration which may facilitate the development of cancer. However, over the past decades some scientists have reported that low-dose of ionizing radiation is not only a harmless agent but often is benefical. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of occupational exposure to low levels of io...
