چکیده

A novel stochastic approach based on Markov-Chain Monte Carlo sampling is investigated for the purpose of image denoising. The additive image denoising problem is formulated as a Bayesian least squares problem, where the goal is to estimate the denoised image given the noisy image as the measurement and an estimated posterior. The posterior is estimated using a nonparametric importance-weighted Markov-Chain Monte Carlo sampling approach based on an adaptive Geman-McClure objective function. By learning the posterior in a nonparametric manner, the proposed Markov-Chain Monte Carlo denoising (MCMCD) approach adapts in a flexible manner to the underlying image and noise statistics. Furthermore, the computational complexity of MCMCD is relatively low when compared to other published methods with similar denoising performance. The effectiveness of the MCMCD method at image denoising was investigated using additive Gaussian noise, and was found to achieve state-of-the-art denoising performance in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean structural similarity (SSIM) metrics Preprint submitted to Signal Processing March 26, 2011 when compared to other published methods.

Asynchronous Stochastic Gradient MCMC with Elastic Coupling

We consider parallel asynchronous Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling for problems where we can leverage (stochastic) gradients to define continuous dynamics which explore the target distribution. We outline a solution strategy for this setting based on stochastic gradient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling (SGHMC) which we alter to include an elastic coupling term that ties together multipl...

Bayesian Collaborative Denoising for Monte Carlo Rendering

The stochastic nature of Monte Carlo rendering algorithms inherently produces noisy images. Essentially, three approaches have been developed to solve this issue: improving the ray-tracing strategies to reduce pixel variance, providing adaptive sampling by increasing the number of rays in regions needing so, and filtering the noisy image as a post-process. Although the algorithms from the latte...

Removing the Noise in Monte Carlo Rendering with General Image Denoising Algorithms

Monte Carlo rendering systems can produce important visual effects such as depth of field, motion blur, and area lighting, but the rendered images suffer from objectionable noise at low sampling rates. Although years of research in image processing has produced powerful denoising algorithms, most of them assume that the noise is spatially-invariant over the entire image and cannot be directly a...

Local Quasi-Monte Carlo Exploration

In physically-based image synthesis, the path space of light transport paths is usually explored by stochastic sampling. The two main families of algorithms are Monte Carlo/quasi-Monte Carlo sampling and Markov chain Monte Carlo. While the former is known for good uniform discovery of important regions, the latter facilitates efficient exploration of local effects. We introduce a hybrid samplin...
