The passive scalar spectrum and the Obukhov–Corrsin constant
نویسنده
چکیده
It is pointed out that, for microscale Reynolds numbers less than about 1000, the passive scalar spectrum in turbulent shear flows is less steep than anticipated and that the Obukhov–Corrsin constant can be defined only if the microscale Reynolds number exceeds this value. In flows where the large-scale velocity field is essentially isotropic ~as in grid turbulence!, the expected 5/3 scaling is observed even at modest Reynolds numbers. All known data on the Obukhov–Corrsin constant are collected. The support for the notion of a ‘‘universal’’ constant is shown to be reasonable. Its value is about 0.4. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~96!01801-4#

Application of Arbitrary-Order Hilbert Spectral Analysis to Passive Scalar Turbulence
In previous work [Huang et al., PRE 82, 26319, 2010], we found that the passive scalar turbulence field maybe less intermittent than what we believed before. Here we apply the same method, namely arbitrary-order Hilbert spectral analysis, to a passive scalar (temperature) time series with a Taylor’s microscale Reynolds number Reλ ' 3000. We find that with increasing Reynolds number, the discrep...
متن کاملSchmidt number effects on turbulent transport with uniform mean scalar gradient
We study by direct numerical simulations the effects of Schmidt number ~Sc! on passive scalars mixed by forced isotropic and homogeneous turbulence. The scalar field is maintained statistically stationary by a uniform mean gradient. We consider the scaling of spectra, structure functions, local isotropy and intermittency. For moderately diffusive scalars with Sc51/8 and 1, the Taylor-scale Reyn...
متن کاملOn the anisotropy of the turbulent passive scalar in the presence of a mean scalar gradient
We investigate the origin of the scalar gradient skewness in isotropic turbulence on which a mean scalar gradient is imposed. The problem of the advection of an anisotropic scalar field is reformulated in terms of the advection of an isotropic vector field. For this field triadic closure equations are derived. It is shown how the scaling of the scalar gradient skewness depends on the choice of ...
متن کاملAxial motion and scalar transport in stretched spiral vortices
We consider the dynamics of axial velocity and of scalar transport in the stretched-spiral vortex model of turbulent fine scales. A large-time asymptotic solution to the scalar advection-diffusion equation, with an azimuthal swirling velocity field provided by the stretched spiral vortex, is used together with appropriate stretching transformations to determine the evolution of both the axial v...
متن کاملRelative dispersion of a passive scalar plume in turbulent shear flow.
Relative dispersion of a passive scalar plume was investigated in uniformly sheared, nearly homogeneous, turbulent flow with Reλ≈150 using planar laser-induced fluorescence. Mean concentration maps were determined both in the laboratory frame and in a frame attached to the instantaneous center of mass of the plume cross section. The distance-neighbor function had a shape that was compatible wit...
