چکیده

AND YUEFENG F. XIE aloacetic acids (HAAs) are a group of disinfection by-products (DBPs) regulated under the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule (D/DBPR). The maximum contaminant level for five HAAs is 60 μg/L. These five regulated HAAs are monochloroacetic acid (ClAA), dichloroacetic acid (Cl2AA), trichloroacetic acid (Cl3AA), monobromoacetic acid (BrAA), and dibromoacetic acid (Br2AA). The upcoming Stage 2 D/DBPR may require water utilities to comply with this maximum contaminant level by using locational running annual averages instead of running annual averages. This will require water utilities to better control peak DBP levels in their distribution systems. As a result of this requirement, many water utilities are interested in identifying and adopting cost-effective HAA control technologies. Currently, the best available technologies for HAA control include enhanced coagulation/ softening and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for precursor removal and the use of alternative disinfectants.

Biologically active carbon filtration for haloacetic acid removal from swimming pool water.

A biologically activate carbon (BAC) filter was continuously operated on site for the treatment of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in an outdoor swimming pool at an average empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 5.8 min. Results showed that BAC filtration was a viable technology for direct removal of HAAs from the pool water with a nominal efficiency of 57.7% by the filter while the chlorine residuals were 1...

Evaluate HAA removal in biologically active carbon filters using the ICR database

The effects of biologically active carbon (BAC) filtration on haloacetic acid (HAA) levels in plant effluents and distribution systems were investigated using the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Information Collection Rule (ICR) database. The results showed that average HAA5 concentrations in all locations were 20.4 μg$L and 29.6 μg$L in ICR plants with granular activated carbon...

Advanced Oxidation Process for Haloacetic Acid Removal in Tehranpars Water Treatment Using CuO Nanocatalyst

Potentially harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs), as a significant challenge in water treatment, are formed when oxidizing disinfectants react with natural organic matters (NOM). Unfortunately, an  unwanted  side  effect  is  the  formation  of  harmful by-products,  such  as  THMs  and  HAAs, following the chlorination stage. DBPs  cause a variety of diseases like cancer in humans.  In this ...

بررسی میزان حذف کادمیوم از محلول های آبی با استفاده از کربن فعال بیولوژیکی (BAC)

Background and purpose : The contamination of water by toxic heavy metals is a world-wide environmental problem. Discharges containing Çadmium, are strictly controlled because of the highly toxic nature of this element and its tendency to accumulate in the tissues of living organisms. There is not enough study on removal of low concentration of Çadmium (in the polluted water resources) by bio...

Haloacetic acid removal by sequential zero-valent iron reduction and biologically active carbon degradation.

An innovative haloacetic acid (HAA) removal process was developed. The process consisted of a zero-valent iron (Fe(0)) column followed by a biologically active carbon (BAC) column that were efficient in degrading tri- and di-HAAs, and mono- and di-HAAs, respectively. The merit of the process was demonstrated by its performance in removing trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). An empty bed contact time o...
