Assessing socioeconomic impacts of transport infrastructure projects in the Greater Mekong Subregion

چکیده
This study attempts to quantify the links between infrastructure investment and poverty reduction using a multi-region general equilibrium model, supplemented with household survey data for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). Infrastructure investment is an important step in economic development, with improvements in transportation infrastructure boosting economic opportunities throughout the region, for example by significantly reducing travel times and costs. In this study, we concentrate on quantifying the effects of some of the key linkages between upgraded infrastructure, economic growth, and poverty reduction. We model the impact of both reducing transport costs and improving trade facilitation in the GMS. Our findings suggest strong gains to the GMS countries as a result of infrastructure development and trade facilitation with national poverty reduced throughout the region. However, the impact on various segments of these populations differs, depending in part on factor returns. JEL Classification: O12, F15, I32 ADBI Working Paper 234 Stone, Strutt, and Hertel

Inclusion of Health in Environmental Impact Assessment of Major Transport Infrastructure Projects in Vietnam
Background Infrastructure spending, especially in the transport sector, is expected to increase rapidly in Vietnam. This boost in transportation investment impacts health. Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) are essential tools for decision-making to reduce and mitigate anticipated impacts of development projects, and integration of health assessment as an essential part of the EIA process ...
متن کاملIncluding Health in Environmental Assessments of Major Transport Infrastructure Projects: A Documentary Analysis
Background Transport policy and practice impacts health. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are regulated public policy mechanisms that can be used to consider the health impacts of major transport projects before they are approved. The way health is considered in these environmental assessments (EAs) is not well known. This research asked: How and to what extent was human health considere...

Abstract – The Greater Mekong Subregion, which consists of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and a small part of China, is the world’s epicenter of falciparum malaria. Depending on the country, approximately 50 to 90% of all malaria cases are due to this species. We have been developing techniques to enha...
متن کاملSocial impacts of large dam projects: a comparison of international case studies and implications for best practice.
This paper applies the tool of social impact assessment (SIA) to understand the effects of large dam projects on human communities. We draw upon data from two recent SIA projects: the Lesotho Highlands Water Project in Southern Africa, and the Manwan Dam, located on the upper Mekong River in southwestern China. These two cases allow us to examine the social impacts of large dam projects through...
