چکیده

[1] Sea level rise in the Gulf ofMexico has occurred at a rate of 1.8–2.2 mm/yr during the 20th century, or nearly the same as observed globally due to combined steric and water mass changes. Tide gauges in coastal Louisiana, however, record a substantially larger rate of rise and while a number of causal mechanismsmay be responsible, their specific contribution is poorly understood. Using a realistic viscoelastic Earth model, detailed geologic parameters for south Louisiana and new GPS data, we demonstrate that Holocene sedimentary loading in the Gulf and Mississippi River delta is capable of contributing to 1–8 mm/yr of subsidence over areas of 30–0.75 10 km. The Role of Hydrocarbon Production on Land Subsidence and Fault Reactivation in the Louisiana Coastal Zone

CHAN, A.W. and ZOBACK, M.D., 2007. The role of hydrocarbon production on land subsidence and fault reactivation in the Louisiana coastal zone. Journal of Coastal Research, 23(3), 771–786. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 07490208. We use a simple analytical model of reservoir compaction and a numerical model incorporating both reservoir compaction and fault slip to investigate surface subsidence...

Tectonic control of subsidence and southward displacement of southeast Louisiana with respect to stable North America

[1] GPS data collected between 1995 and 2006 suggest that southeast Louisiana, including New Orleans and the larger Mississippi Delta, are both subsiding vertically and moving southward with respect to stable North America. Both motions are likely related due to their common tectonic setting. Subsidence in the New Orleans area occurs in part because it is located in the hanging wall of a large ...

Response of the Rhône deltaic margin to loading and subsidence during the last climatic cycle

Passive continental margin subsidence is initiated by the synrift mechanical stretching of the lithospheric upper brittle layer and continues during the postrift phase; the thermal cooling and contraction of the upwelled asthenosphere forces the margin to subside in addition to the overloads from sea water and sediments. Therefore, the total subsidence in stretched basins includes faultcontroll...

Vulnerability of Louisiana's coastal wetlands to present-day rates of relative sea-level rise

Coastal Louisiana has lost about 5,000 km2 of wetlands over the past century and concern exists whether remaining wetlands will persist while facing some of the world's highest rates of relative sea-level rise (RSLR). Here we analyse an unprecedented data set derived from 274 rod surface-elevation table-marker horizon stations, to determine present-day surface-elevation change, vertical accreti...

Causes of hot-spot wetland loss in the Mississippi delta plain

Field surveys and sediment cores were used to estimate marsh erosion and land subsidence at Madison Bay, a well-known wetland loss hot spot in coastal Louisiana. Former marshes of Madison Bay are under about 1 m of water. Nearly two-thirds of the permanent flooding was caused by rapid subsidence in the late 1960s, whereas the other third was caused by subsequent erosion. Subsidence rates near M...
