The Magnetic Field of the Solar Corona from Pulsar Observations

چکیده
Abstract. We present a novel experiment with the capacity to independently measure both the electron density and the magnetic field of the solar corona. We achieve this through measurement of the excess Faraday rotation due to propagation of the polarised emission from a number of pulsars through the magnetic field of the solar corona. This method yields independent measures of the integrated electron density, via dispersion of the pulsed signal and the magnetic field, via the amount of Faraday rotation. In principle this allows the determination of the integrated magnetic field through the solar corona along many lines of sight without any assumptions regarding the electron density distribution. We present a detection of an increase in the rotation measure of the pulsar J1801−2304 of approximately 160 radmat an elongation of 0.95◦ from the centre of the solar disk. This corresponds to a lower limit of the magnetic field strength along this line of sight of > 393μG. The lack of precision in the integrated electron density measurement restricts this result to a limit, but application of coronal plasma models can further constrain this to approximately 20mG, along a path passing 2.5 solar radii from the solar limb. Which is consistent with predictions obtained using extensions to the Source Surface models published by Wilcox Solar Observatory

Acceleration of the solar wind as a result of the reconnection of open magnetic flux with coronal loops
[1] There are compelling observations of a clear anticorrelation between solar wind flow speed and coronal electron temperature, as determined from solar wind ionic charge states. A simple theory is presented which can account for these observations, including the functional form of the correlation: Solar wind flow speed squared varies essentially linearly as the inverse of the coronal electron...
متن کاملAn improved solar wind electron-density model for pulsar timing
Variations in the solar wind density introduce variable delays into pulsar timing observations. Current pulsar timing analysis programs only implement simple models of the solar wind, which not only limit the timing accuracy, but can also affect measurements of pulsar rotational, astrometric and orbital parameters. We describe a new model of the solar wind electron density content which uses ob...
متن کاملGeneration of Alfvén Waves by Small-Scale Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Spicules
Alfvén waves dissipation is an extensively studied mechanism for the coronal heating problem. These waves can be generated by magnetic reconnection and propagated along the reconnected field lines. Here, we study the generation of Alfvén waves at the presence of both steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the longitudinally density stratified of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to...

In this paper, the effect of compressive viscosity on the slow mode oscillation of solar corona loops is studied. The coronal loops medium are considered in low beta condition, uniform magnetic field in the presence of gravitational stratification and temperature gradient. Two-dimensional Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics (MHD) equations are perturbed about the equilibrium and thenthese equations are lin...
متن کاملPredictions of Energy and Helicity in Four Major Eruptive Solar Flares
In order to better understand the solar genesis of interplanetary magnetic clouds (MCs), we model the magnetic and topological properties of four large eruptive solar flares and relate them to observations. We use the three-dimensional Minimum Current Corona model (Longcope, 1996, Solar Phys. 169, 91) and observations of pre-flare photospheric magnetic field and flare ribbons to derive values o...
