چکیده

This Special Issue on Connectionist Models of Human Language Processing provides an opportunity for an appraisal both of speciic connectionist models and of the status and utility of connectionist models of language in general. This introduction provides the background for the papers in the Special Issue. The development of connectionist models of language is traced, from their intellectual origins, to the state of current research. Key themes that arise throughout diierent areas of connectionist psycholinguistics are highlighted , and recent developments in speech processing, morphology, sentence processing, language production, and reading are described. We argue that connectionist psycholinguistics has already had a signiicant impact on the psychology of language, and that connectionist models are likely to have an important innuence on future research.

Language development and acquisition in children

Language acquisition is a natural developmental process and is unique to Homo sapiens in which a child acquiring his or her mother tongue as a first language.  The simplest theory of language development is that children learn language by imitating adult language. A second possibility is that children acquire language through conditioning. Noam Chomsky put forward innateness hypothesis. Piaget ...

Spoken Language Processing in the Hybrid Connectionist Architecture SCREEN

In this paper1 we describe a robust, learning approach to spoken language understanding. Since interactively spoken and computationally analyzed language often contains many errors, robust connectionist networks are used for providing a at screening analysis. A screening analysis is a shallow at analysis based on category sequences at various syntactic, semantic and dialog levels. Rather than u...

Hybrid Approaches to Neural Network-based Language Processing

In this paper we outline hybrid approaches to arti cial neural network-based natural language processing. We start by motivating hybrid symbolic/connectionist processing. Then we suggest various types of symbolic/connectionist integration for language processing: connectionist structure architectures, hybrid transfer architectures, hybrid processing architectures. Furthermore, we focus particul...

A Hybrid and Connectionist Architecture for a Scanning Understanding

This paper describes a general architecture SCAN for hybrid symbolic connectionist processing of natural language phrases. SCAN's architecture shows how learned connectionist domain-dependent semantic representations can be combined with encoded symbolic syntactic representations. Within this general architecture we focus on a connectionist model for semantic classiication based on a scanning u...
