چکیده

We compare the number of detected 22 GHz H2O masers in the Local Group galaxies M31, M33, NGC 6822, IC 10, IC 1613, DDO 187, GR8, NGC 185, and the Magellanic Clouds with the water maser population of the Milky Way. To accomplish this we searched for water maser emission in the two Local Group galaxies M33 and NGC 6822 using the Very Large Array (VLA) and incorporated results from previous studies. We observed 62 H regions in M33 and 36 regions with Hα emission in NGC 6822. Detection limits are 0.0015 and 0.0008 L⊙ for M33 and NGC 6822, respectively (corresponding to 47 and 50 mJy in three channels with 0.7 km s−1 width). M33 hosts three water masers above our detection limit, while in NGC 6822 no maser source was detected. We find that the water maser detection rates in the Local Group galaxies M31, M33, NGC 6822, IC 1613, DDO 187, GR8, NGC 185, and the Magellanic Clouds are consistent with expectations from the Galactic water masers if one considers the different star formation rates of the galaxies. However, the galaxy IC 10 exhibits an overabundance of masers, which may result from a compact central starburst.

Towards Proper Motions in the Local Group

Key and still largely missing parameters for measuring the mass content and distribution of the Local Group are the proper motion vectors of its member galaxies. The problem when trying to derive the gravitational potential of the Local Group is that usually only radial velocities are known, and hence statistical approaches have to be used. The expected proper motions for galaxies within the Lo...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Ubiquitous Water Masers in Nearby Star-forming Galaxies

We report the detection of water maser emission from four nearby galaxies hosting ultradense H II (UDHII) regions, He 2-10, the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039), NGC 4214, and NGC 5253, with the Green Bank Telescope. Our detection rate is 100%, and all of these H2O “kilomasers” (LH2O < 10 L⊙) are located toward regions of known star formation as traced by UDHII regions and bright 24 μm emissio...

Response of circumnuclear water masers to luminosity changes in an active galactic nucleus

Circumnuclear water masers can respond in two ways to changes in the luminosity of an active galactic nucleus. First, an increase in the X-ray luminosity can lead to an increase in the maser emissivity; and second, an increase in the intrinsic bolometric luminosity may result in a temporary decrease in the difference between the gas and dust temperature and a consequent decrease in the maser ou...

A GBT Search for Water Masers in Nearby AGNs

Using the Green Bank Telescope, we have conducted a survey for 1.3 cm water maser emission toward the nuclei of nearby active galaxies, the most sensitive large survey for H2O masers to date. Among 145 galaxies observed, maser emission was newly detected in eleven sources and confirmed in one other. Our survey targeted nearby (v < 12,000 km s), mainly type 2 AGNs north of δ = –20, and includes ...
