چکیده

In this paperwe propose away to dealwith natural language inference (NLI) by implementing Modern Type Theoretical Semantics in the proof assistant Coq. The paper is a first attempt to deal with NLI and natural language reasoning in general by using the proof assistant technology. Valid NLIs are treated as theorems and as such the adequacy of our account is tested by trying to prove them. We use Luo’s Modern Type Theory (MTT) with coercive subtyping as the formal language into which we translate natural language semantics, and we further implement these semantics in the Coq proof assistant. It is shown that the use of a MTT with an adequate subtyping mechanism can give us a number of promising results as regards NLI. Specifically, it is shown that a number of inference cases, i.e. quantifiers, adjectives, conjoined noun phrases and temporal reference among other things can be successfully dealt with. It is then shown, that even though Coq is an interactive and not an automated theorem prover, automation of all of the test examples is possible by introducing userdefined automated tactics. Lastly, the paper offers a number of innovative approaches to NL phenomena like adjectives, collective predication, comparatives and factive verbs among other things, contributing in this respect to the theoretical study of formal semantics using MTTs. Natural Language Reasoning Using proof-assistant technology: Rich Typing and beyond∗

In this paper, we study natural language inference based on the formal semantics in modern type theories (MTTs) and their implementations in proof-assistants such as Coq. To this end, the type theory UTT with coercive subtyping is used as the logical language in which natural language semantics is translated to, followed by the implementation of these semantics in the Coq proof-assistant. Valid...

Coqatoo: Generating Natural Language Versions of Coq Proofs

Due to their numerous advantages, formal proofs and proof assistants, such as Coq, are becoming increasingly popular. However, one disadvantage of using proof assistants is that the resulting proofs can sometimes be hard to read and understand, particularly for less-experienced users. To address this issue, we have implemented a tool capable of generating natural language versions of Coq proofs...

Papuq : a Coq assistant ?

We describe an extension to CoqIDE called Papuq, targeted at students learning the basics of mathematical reasoning. The extension tries to bridge the gap between natural language used to teach proofs during the university course and the artificial language of Coq proofs. We believe it will give the students the possibility to practice writing proofs by themselves and at the same time to learn ...

Coq as a Metatheory for Nuprl with Bar Induction

These past few years, we have been experimenting in Nuprl with versions of Brouwer’s Bar Induction principle. Until recently we had no formal proof that these rules are valid Nuprl reasoning principles. Thanks to our formalization of Nuprl’s metatheory in Coq, we can now rigorously check whether these principles are consistent with Nuprl. In this paper we present a proof, using our Coq framewor...

Encoding Natural Semantics in Coq

We address here the problem of automatically translating the Natural Semantics of programming languages to Coq, in order to prove formally general properties of languages. Natural Semantics 18] is a formalism for specifying semantics of programming languages inspired by Plotkin's Structural Operational Semantics 22]. The Coq proof development system 12], based on the Calculus of Constructions e...
