چکیده

• Atherosclerotic lesions tend to form in areas of the vascular tree subjected to injury —usually mechanical injury. Since injury enhances the phagocytic activity of endothelial cells,' the possibility arises that localization of lipid material may be due in part to phagocytosis of serum lipoproteins by injury-activated aortic endothelial cells. Supporting this possibility is the observation that endothelial cells overlying foam cell plaques formed in cholesterol-fed rabbits display phagocytic activity toward intravenously injected colloidal thorium dioxide.' In addition, electron microscope studies of these endothelial cells are interpreted as indicating that they are actively removing lipoproteins from the blood by pinocytosis,' a process believed to be basically similar to that of phagocytosis.' Phagocytosis and/or pinocytosis are further implicated in atherosclerosis in that the foam cell plaques of cholesterolinduced rabbit atherosclerosis, similar in appearance to the fatty streaks or flecks generally considered to be the first gross manifestation of human atherosclerosis, seem to be produced by an aggregation of fat-filled cells (presumably smooth muscles and/or macrophages) that have taken up lipid material deposited in the subendothelial space.-

Antihistaminic Effect of Bunium persicum on Guinea Pig Tracheal Chains

In a previous study, the relaxant and anticholinergic (functional antagonism) effects of Bunium persicum (B. persicum ) have been demonstrated on guinea pig tracheal chains. To elucidate the other mechanisms responsible for this relaxant effect, the inhibitory effect of this plant on histamine H1 receptors was examined in this study. The antihistaminic effects of aqueous and macerated extracts,...

Potentiation of antimalarial drug action by chlorpheniramine against multidrug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in vitro.

Chlorpheniramine, a histamine H1 receptor antagonist, was assayed for in vitro antimalarial activity against multidrug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum K1 strain and chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum T9/94 clone, by measuring the 3H-hypoxanthine incorporation. Chlorphenirame inhibited P. falciparum K1 and T9/94 growth with IC50 values of 136.0+/-40.2 microM and 102.0+/-22.6 microM respectively...

Synthesis of 1-Substituted-4-(Pyridin-4-yl) [1,2,4] Triazolo [4,3-a] Quinazolin-5(4H)-ones as a New Class of H1- Antihistaminic Agents

Purpose: To synthesize a new series of 1-substituted-4-(pyridin-4-yl) [1,2,4] triazolo[4,3-a]quinazolin5(4H)-ones and evaluate them for H1-antihistaminic activity with negligible side effects in guinea pigs. Methods: The synthesized compounds were characterized by Infrared spectroscopy (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) data. The purity of the compounds w...

Chlorpheniramine inhibits the ornithine decarboxylase induction of Ehrlich carcinoma growing in vivo.

The antihistaminic (+/-)-chlorpheniramine significantly reduced the progression of Ehrlich carcinoma when it was administered at 0.5 mg/mouse/day from the third day on, after tumour inoculation. The ODC activity of tumour cells was diminished by 70% on day 7 after tumour transplantation, when maximum ODC activity is detected in non-treated tumour growing 'in vivo'. Northern blot analyses indica...

Antihistaminic activity of Clitoria ternatea L. roots

Clonidine, a α2 adrenoreceptor agonist induces dose dependent catalepsy in mice, which was inhibited by histamine H1 receptor antagonists but not by H2 receptor antagonist. Clonidine releases histamine from mast cells which is responsible for different asthmatic conditions. Clitoria ternatea L. (Family: Fabaceae) is a perimial twing herb. The roots have anti-inflammatory properties and are usef...
